‘The Odyssey’ Box Office Collection Day 1: Christopher Nolan’s epic debuts at Rs 20 crore; A record of one of India’s biggest Hollywood openers

As per the preliminary estimates at the box office, ‘The Odyssey’ collected Rs 20.76 crore on the first day, taking the nett collection to Rs 17.40 crore after playing across 8,413 shows nationwide. The film recorded an impressive overall occupancy of 48.7 percent, driven by demand for premium formats, particularly IMAX screenings.

‘The Odyssey’ leads the English edition collection

The film was widely released in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, but it was the original English version that accounted for the bulk of the collections.Early language-based estimates indicate that the original English version of the film clearly emerged ahead, earning an estimated Rs 13.75 crore on the film’s opening day. The Hindi-dubbed version followed with around Rs 1.90 crore, while the Telugu version grossed around Rs 1.10 crore and the Tamil version added an estimated Rs 65 lakh.

The English release witnessed the strongest audience poll, recording around 70 percent occupancy across 2,113 shows. In comparison, the Hindi version grabbed around 10 percent from 1,468 shows, while the Tamil and Telugu versions reported a healthy occupancy of 22 percent from 227 shows and 25 percent from 346 shows respectively.

IMAX Boost shows the number of opening days

Expected from Christopher Nolan releases, premium large-format screenings led to a big draw. The film recorded an impressive 73.86 percent occupancy in English IMAX 2D shows.

‘The Odyssey’ among India’s biggest Hollywood openers

With an estimated net opening of Rs 17.40 crore, ‘The Odyssey’ easily joins the list of biggest Hollywood launches in India. The film is currently behind ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ which has collected an estimated Rs 18 crore nett and ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ which has collected an estimated Rs 21 crore nett.However, trade analysts note that the final Day 1 figures may still see a higher overall total, with the film expected to be closer to the Rs 20 crore nett mark if late night shows and revised estimates are factored in. The opening was particularly noteworthy as the film was awarded an A certificate.

‘The Odyssey’ recorded strong pre-sales

The film also benefited from exceptional advance bookings.With nearly 396,000 tickets sold in advance, The Odyssey is among the top four Hollywood pre-sales in India, behind ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ (505K), ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ (474K), ‘The Conjuring’ (443K). It also surpassed ‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’ (248K).

According to early estimates from Deadline, the film is expected to gross around USD 50 million from Friday and preview screenings in North America, setting the stage for a three-day domestic opening of USD 117 million.If these estimates hold, the film will deliver Matt Damon’s biggest opening weekend as a leading star and become the highest opening weekend for a live-action film in North America this year. The film will surpass ‘Backroom’ (USD 81.4 million) to become the biggest opening weekend for an R-rated film of the year.The film is already Universal Pictures’ biggest opening weekend for an R-rated title, surpassing even Fifty Shades of Gray (USD 85.1 million).
