Veteran theater director, actor and producer Vijaya MehtaOne of the most influential figures in modern Marathi theatre, died on Tuesday at the age of 91. He breathed his last at his residence, leaving behind a rich legacy that changed the landscape of Indian theatre.Known as “Bye” in theater circles, Mehta’s death has cast a pall over the Marathi film and theater fraternity, with artistes and admirers remembering him as a pioneering force who redefined staging and storytelling.
Pioneer of Marathi experimental theatre
Born as Vijaya Jayavant on November 4, 1934, in Baroda, Gujarat (now Vadodara), Mehta graduated from the University of Mumbai and trained under legendary theater practitioners Ibrahim Alkazi and Adi Marjban. His rigorous grounding in theater would later help shape one of the most significant artistic movements in post-independence India.In the 1960s, he co-founded the groundbreaking theater group Rangayan with playwright Vijay Tendulkar and actors Sriram Lagoo and Arvind Deshpande. The troupe became a driving force behind Maharashtra’s experimental theater movement, challenging conventional commercial theater and presenting bold, contemporary narratives.
Landmark productions that changed Indian theatre
Mehta’s stage adaptation of CT Khanolkar’s Ek Shunya Bajirao is considered a breakthrough in contemporary Indian theatre. He also introduced the works of Bertolt Brecht to Marathi audiences with his acclaimed adaptation of The Caucasian Chalk Circle titled Ajab Nyaya Vertulacha. His productions Barrister, Shakuntal, Hamidabaichi Kothi and Ma are celebrated for their innovation and artistic depth.His contribution has extended beyond India by collaborating with international artists on Indo-German theater projects, which have helped introduce Indian theater to a wider global audience.

Although theater was his first love, Vijaya Mehta also made a lasting impact on Indian parallel cinema. She appeared in acclaimed films like Kalyug and Party, garnering widespread appreciation for her performance.As a filmmaker, he directed notable works including Rao Sahib and Pestonji, both of which are considered important contributions to India’s parallel cinema movement.
A career honored with prestigious awards
Mehta has received numerous honors in a career spanning more than six decades. He was awarded the Sangeet Nataka Akademi Award for directing in 1975 and was later awarded the META Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his immense contribution to Indian theatre. She also received the Padma Shri in 1986, won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for Rao Sahib, the Best Actress Award at the Asia Pacific Film Festival for Party and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Tagore Ratna in 2012.
