For millions of students, NEET-UG is not just another entrance exam. It is the gateway to a career in medicine and one of the most watched academic events in the country. While discussions surrounding this year’s return to exams have largely focused on security arrangements, legal procedures and exam logistics, the latest instructions from the national testing agency offer a different perspective – focusing on what awaits candidates once they enter the exam room.The NTA’s statement, issued on June 25, details the facilities and support measures to be introduced for the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination to be held on June 21. More than 2 million candidates appeared for the exam at 5,440 exam centers in India and 14 overseas exam centers. The agency said that in addition to extensive safety measures, it has introduced several changes aimed at making the testing environment more comfortable, convenient and less stressful for test takers.From drinking water to medical supportSome of the arrangements highlighted by the NTA are simple but practical. Each exam center is equipped with clean drinking water, adequate lighting, working fans and backup power to ensure that candidates can complete the exam without interruption.The center also provides medical support through basic first aid facilities. The agency said test takers with diabetes can bring approved items such as fruit and candy tablets, recognizing that medical requirements should not be a barrier to taking the test.Candidates are also allowed to bring clear water bottles into the exam room, a requirement that was communicated in the exam guidelines before the exam.Small changes in the examination roomSeveral operational changes have been made within the exam room. Instead of requiring candidates to bring their own stationery, NTA provides black ballpoint pens at each centre. The move is intended to simplify the admission process and reduce the number of personal items brought into the exam room.The exam will take place from 2:00 pm to 5:15 pm, giving candidates 15 minutes more time than the previous schedule. Prior to the review, the agency had clarified through an announcement that the extension was part of the approved review schedule.The question booklet has also been redesigned. It includes four pages for roughing out—double the previous allotment—two of which follow the instructions. According to the NTA, the revised layout is designed to make rough work easier, including for left-handed candidates.Each exam room is also equipped with an official wall clock, ensuring candidates can monitor the time without relying on a personal watch, which is not allowed under exam rules.Mental health support and wider screening workOne of the measures highlighted by the agency is the integration of Tele-MANAS, the Indian government’s mental health support service. Through the helpline, candidates experiencing exam-related stress or anxiety can contact trained counselors.Candidate support measures form part of a larger exam campaign. The NEET-UG 2026 re-examination is conducted in 13 languages ​​across 5,440 centers in India and 14 centers abroad.
