More than 25 years after winning hearts with ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas,’ Carrey is reportedly in talks with Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment to produce a sequel to the 2000 favorite. Apart from actors, Ron HowardHe, who directed the original live-action film, is also expected to return to direct the sequel and produce with his longtime Imagine Entertainment partner Brian Grazer, according to a report in The Hollywood Reporter.The untitled project will reportedly have a screenplay by comedy writers Alec Berg, Jeff Shaffer and David Mandel. The trio previously collaborated in 2003 Dr. Seuss Adaptation of ‘The Cat in the Hat’ starring Mike Myers. Plot details for the sequel are under wraps, and no release date has been announced.

Released just before Thanksgiving in 2000, ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ was a big hit at the box office, grossing over USD 260 million domestically. The film became the highest-grossing film in North America that year and collected USD 345 million worldwide. It also won the Academy Award for Best Makeup.Outside of its theatrical run, the film has ranked among the top 10 most-streamed holiday movies in each of the last five years, according to Nielsen streaming data. Last year, the live-action version of Carrey even surpassed the 2018 animated adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch on the streaming charts.
