‘My father told me Hindu-Muslim marriage too hard’
Recalling the conversation, Bindu said her father was generally someone who believed in religious harmony and never discriminated between communities.“We are among those people who believe that Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians – all are brothers. It was always my father’s word,” shares Bindu. However, when he expressed his desire to marry Farah Naz, Dara Singh sounded a note of caution.“He told me, ‘Bindu, there is one more thing. Hindu-Muslim marriage is very difficult.’The actor recalled being confident that things would work out.“When I told him I wanted to marry Farah, he said, ‘It’s very difficult, period. In the end, things often go wrong.’ I told him, ‘Dad, nothing will happen.’ He said, ‘Think carefully. These things eventually become difficult.’
‘I don’t regret because I have Fateh’
Looking back, Bindu admits that her father had an affair, though she insists that she doesn’t regret her decision.“I don’t regret it because I have Fateh, a wonderful boy who I love more than my life. But it was okay.”The actor used the experience to underline the importance of listening to his parents.“Always remember that parents give us advice, but we don’t listen. We wonder, ‘What do they know?’ But they know more than we do. They have more experience and they are your God.”He added, “We think we’re so smart and know everything. But when they stop you or warn you, it’s often a sign from God. Listen to them.”
‘Religion was a factor’
When asked if religion played a role in the breakup of her marriage with Farah Naj, Bindu gave a straightforward answer.“Absolutely. Absolutely.”The actor explained that religion was initially not a point of conflict between them.“Religion was perfectly normal among us. But suddenly he became very religious.”According to Bindu, the transition created differences that were difficult to navigate.“We never had that high religious system. So when you suddenly become very religious, complications arise. That’s the main reason, I think.”
Dara Singh’s message of religious unity
Interestingly, despite his caution about inter-faith marriages, Bindu said his father was a firm believer in religious unity throughout his life.He recalled a poem by Dara Singh before his death, which celebrated harmony between different religions.“Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Christian – all are brothers,” Bindu quotes from the poem. The actor said the poem emphasized that although different spiritual leaders may lead different paths, they all ultimately lead to the same destination.
‘We are all one’
Bindu concludes by reiterating the values he inherited from his father.“We are all one.”Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s slogan, he added, “As Modiji says, ‘Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas.’ Never try to divide us, never try to break us. We are all one and we will remain one.”Bindu and Farah Naz got married in 1996 and later separated. The former couple has a son, Fateh Randhawa. While acknowledging the challenges they faced, the actor said he remains grateful for the relationship and family it has given him.
