controversies surrounding CBSEThe Class 12 result declaration process took a new turn a few weeks ago after the board admitted that it mistakenly uploaded another student’s Physics answer sheet under Vedant Shrivastava’s roll number. This time, the board and the student were publicly divided over whether the nine-point increase in his physics grade was the result of a reassessment or the correction of an issue that arose after a confusion on an earlier answer sheet.The latest controversy started when Vedant shared a video on X saying that he had received the re-evaluation results. According to him, he applied for a re-evaluation of 11 questions, and as a result, his overall score only improved by two points – one point each in mathematics and computer science.“I got the reassessment result. I applied for 11 questions, but the reassessment result only increased two points,” he said.In another post, Vedant wrote, “Hi @cbseindia29, the 9 marks you said were improved in Physics were not improved through the process of re-evaluation, they were my real marks which you did not give me earlier because you exchanged my answer sheet while the 2 marks were increased by 1 mark each in cs and maths.”CBSE responded to the claims in an official statement released on Monday, calling Vedant’s social media post “factually incorrect” and a “blatant lie”. According to the board, his theory scores in mathematics went from 46 to 47, physics from 35 to 44, and computer science from 61 to 62, bringing the total score after re-evaluation to 11.Vedant, however, argued that CBSE treated two separate developments as one. In his reply to the board, he wrote: “How is this a blatant lie? The 9-point improvement in physics did not happen after the re-evaluation door was opened. If the answer sheet of physics is not mine, then how can the marks given on the answer sheet be my marks?”The controversy began in May when Vedant claimed that the physical scanned answer keys provided by CBSE did not belong to him. He said the handwriting and attempted answers differed from his own. His post went viral and some students also expressed concerns over CBSE’s new on-screen marking (OSM) system.After reviewing the matter, CBSE admitted that answers were inadvertently exchanged during the results declaration process. Subsequently, the committee sent Vedant his actual physics answer sheet and informed him that action would be taken to update his results where applicable. After that correction, his physics score was revised.After receiving the original answers, Vedant said he noted what he believed were further assessment errors and applied for a reassessment. This is the first year that CBSE is implementing the on-screen marking system. Some students expressed concerns about discrepancies in the assessment’s answer sheets.
