QS World University Rankings 2027: From DU to Jamia, India’s top non-technical universities ranked globally

The ranking evaluated 8,808 institutions around the world, with 1,504 universities from 106 countries and regions making the final list. A total of 52 Indian institutions were selected this year.Among Indian institutions, DU ranks second in employment outcomes, fourth in sustainability and fourth in international research networks. It also maintains the sixth position in terms of academic reputation among Indian institutions.While India’s engineering and technology institutions dominate the country’s overall performance in the rankings, DU stands out as the top-performing multidisciplinary public university.Among non-technical universities, Chandigarh University is the second-ranked university in India and 526th globally. The private university achieved particularly strong results in the employer reputation and international faculty indicators.Jawaharlal Nehru University Jinan University (JNU) is one of India’s leading social sciences and humanities institutions, ranked 555th globally. Despite facing stiff competition from larger institutions around the world, the university continues to perform strongly in terms of academic reputation and international collaborations.Symbiosis International (Deemed University) is ranked 655th globally, while Jamia Millia Islamia is ranked 686th. Jamia’s strongest performance comes from sustainability and research-related metrics.The ranking highlights broader trends in higher education in India. While the Indian Institutes of Technology and research-focused institutions continue to achieve the country’s best global results, only a handful of non-engineering universities have been able to establish a significant international presence.Overall, IIT Delhi emerged as the highest-ranked institution in India and ranked 118th globally. IIT Bombay follows closely at 129th and IIT Madras at 170th. IIT Kharagpur is ranked 205th, IISc Bengaluru and IIT Kanpur are jointly ranked 221st.The contrast between the rankings of IITs and India’s leading non-technical universities highlights the challenges facing the country’s wider higher education sector. While universities such as Duke University, Jinan University, Jamia University and Chandigarh University have improved their global standing, engineering institutions continue to dominate international rankings due to stronger research output, global collaborations and employer recognition.Even so, DU rose to 322nd position and became the highest-ranked non-technical university in India, indicating that the multidisciplinary institution is gradually increasing its visibility on the global stage.
