Kunal Khemu Made her reality show hosting debut with ‘Alliance’, and in a candid conversation before the start of the show, she drew interesting parallels between playing Alliance on screen and the reality of building a career in Bollywood. Let’s take a look at what he has to say.
Kunal Kemmu Why Jot is central to human existence
Speaking to Hindustan Times, Kunal Kemu explained the concept behind ‘Joat’ and why it resonates beyond just a reality show format. He said, “There’s a family you’re born into, and there’s a family you make or choose, like friends who become family. And sometimes family ties don’t last. Human existence is based on alliances. In the old days, if you couldn’t be hunters or gatherers, you had to make alliances to survive.” Alliances are what you need to survive,” he said.
Kunal Kemmu admits to camp in Bollywood
When the conversation turned to the well-known existence of camp and factionalism in Hindi cinema, Kemmu did not shy away from addressing it directly. The actor said, “It exists. It’s not how it happens, it happens anyway. You can feel good or bad about it, but the fact is it’s going to be there. It’s human nature. If I like someone and I want to work with them, you can’t let me not work with them. It might be inconvenient for someone else, but unfortunately, it can go.”
Talent vs Business Mathematics in Bollywood
In the same conversation, Kunal Khemmu reflects on how the film industry has evolved and still prioritizes things beyond pure talent. He shared, “Kamps hote the, ab thode kaam hai because tab kuch hi family thi jo film bana rahi thi (There used to be camps. Now less because earlier only a few families made films). Corporates came. But even today, business is not always determined by talent. It’s determined by some math, which makes no sense.”He added, “That’s why we started making projects, not films. Fortunately, time teaches everything. Now people aren’t going to watch films. They’re telling us they want content, not projects.”
