Gadar: Ek Prem Katha completes 25 years of release, actor Amisha Patel has opened up about her initial concerns about being cast opposite Sunny Deolreveals that he questioned whether the significant age difference between them was suitable for the film.Amisha was 26 when she played Sakina in the 2001 blockbuster, while Sunny Deol, who played Tara Singh, was 43. Looking back, the actor said he was never opposed to age-gap romance on screen, but believes such pairings should only exist when they are justified by the story.While talking to India Today, Ameesha wondered if the casting choice would resonate with the audience.“I had that fear. I wondered if it was age-appropriate casting and if it would fall flat,” she said. “I wasn’t worried because I was a newbie. I would still ask the same question today.”He added, “Even as a newbie, I’m glad I had these questions. I’m glad I had the foresight to ask if it was age-appropriate, and I’m glad the subject justified it.”
‘Age gap is good when story is needed’
The actor said that Bollywood should continue to examine age-gap romances, especially when they are shoehorned into stories without a compelling narrative reason.“If the age gap requires the story and justifies it, that’s fine. It needs to be questioned when the story doesn’t demand an age gap, yet one is inserted. That’s one of the reasons audiences aren’t accepting certain films today, to be very honest,” he said.Ameesha revealed that many people advised her against taking Ghadar as the pairing with Sunny Deol seemed unconventional on paper.“I was advised a lot not to do the film because, on paper, it didn’t tick any boxes. Sunny is a superstar but much older than me. People questioned how I could be paired opposite someone so old,” he said.
Why Tara and Sakina’s relationship worked
Despite the concerns, Ameesha believes the age gap between Tara Singh and Sakina was essential to the narrative and added depth to their love story.“The subject required an age gap. It was a love story of an already established working man who falls in love with a girl when she only attends a convent school,” he explained.According to the actor, they perceived Sakina as someone completely out of his reach.“He thought she was unattainable for many reasons, be it age, social status, education and religion. Everything about Sakina seemed beyond Tara’s reach. To him, she was a queen he could never have. A princess he could never achieve,” he said.Reflecting on the emotional core of the film, Ameesha says the relationship between the two characters transcends religious and social barriers.“And that’s the beauty of Ghadar. He has adapted beautifully to his Hindu culture and his family. At the same time, when push came to shove, and he had to save the love of his life, he was willing to settle in Pakistan. In the mosque, in front of everyone, he made that announcement. He was furious when he was asked to give up his identity,” he said.He added, “So this is a deep love story – one of passion and genuine love. It shows that Hindus and Muslims can live together. Cross-border hostility and hatred are often politically driven. In reality, people across borders have always shared a deep human connection.”
‘Gadar was an underdog film’
Reflecting on the film’s journey, Ameesha described Gadar as an underdog project that few in the industry believed would succeed.“Gadar was an underdog film that no one believed in except the people involved in it. Everyone did it with their heart and soul. They have worked extremely hard, with dedication, sincerity and conviction,” he said.The actor credits producer Nitin Kenny for recognizing his potential before he became a star. She revealed that Kaho Na… Pyaar Hai had not released yet when she approached him for a hug after seeing her magazine photoshoot.Despite widespread skepticism, Ameesha says the audience ultimately proved the doubters wrong and made the film one of the biggest blockbusters in the history of Hindi cinema.“There are many films that look great on paper, but when they release, tell a different story at the box office. At the end of the day, the audience is the king. The film was received by the king, and that’s what matters,” he said.
