The 72nd National Film Award winners are being announced in New Delhi, with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting announcing the recipients across feature films, non-feature films and writing on cinema. The prestigious award awards films certified by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) between January 1, 2024 and December 31, 2024.The first set of announcements recognized several outstanding contributions in the non-feature film category, including honors for writing on cinema. From sound design and editing to music, scriptwriting and film criticism, the awards highlight exceptional talent from across the country.‘Feminichi Fatima’, ‘Blue’ and ‘NDA’ Best Malayalam Film ‘Feminichi Fathima’ and Best Hindi Film ‘Sreekanth’. Among the early winners, the Tamil non-feature film Blu bagged the award for Best Sound Design. TS Hari Hara Sudhan was honored for his work, which added another big recognition to the film.In the Best Editing category, Hindi Non-Feature Film NDA won. Manveer Jasrotia was recognized for his editing, with the jury acknowledging his contribution to the documentary.The award for Best Music Direction in the Non-Feature category went to the Marathi documentary film Parat 41°chya Magavar (On the Trail of 41°). Composer Shivpal Singh Kong is credited for composing the film’s music score.Description, script and special mention winnersThe English-language documentary Little Planet: A Tale of Frogs won Best Narrator. Soundarya Jayachandran was recognized for her narration, which played an important role in bringing the documentary to life.Meanwhile, the Hindi-Kashmiri film Obur (Clouds) won the best script award. Writer Faraz Ali has been recognized for the screenplay.The jury also announced special mention awards for two non-feature films. Chola Dora Aur Sui directed by Jaimin Modi and Lokesh Ghai and Bhadra-Kali directed by Anand Jyoti received the honor. Both films are recognized for their significant contribution to non-feature filmmaking.Winner announcement written on filmThe Best Book Award on Cinema went to Nanirubhude Nimagagi Nadirubhude Nanagagi: Kannada Cinemada Thathava Mathu Rajakeya (I Stand for You, The State Stands for Us: Political and Philosophical Dimensions of Kannada Cinema). Written by Kenchanuru Pradeep Kumar Shetty, the book explores the philosophical and political aspects of Kannada cinema.Sanjeev Srivastava was awarded the Best Film Critic award. He received this recognition for his thoughtful analysis and critical writing on Hindi cinema.
