D Delhi High Court He is scheduled to pronounce his verdict on Friday on a batch of petitions filed by Bollywood actors Rajpal Yadav And others are challenging their convictions and sentences in multiple check bounce cases.According to the agenda published on the Delhi High Court website, a single-judge bench headed by Justice Swarna Kant Sharma will pronounce judgment on July 10 in a batch of criminal miscellaneous petitions and criminal revision petitions arising out of proceedings under the Negotiable Instruments Act.
The judge reserved judgment
Justice Swarana Kant Sharma reserved judgment on the matter on April 2 after a final round of settlement efforts failed despite the High Court’s prolonged intervention. During the hearing, the actor made an emotional plea opposing the settlement offer.The High Court expressed displeasure with the shifting position taken by Yadav regarding payment of dues. At one point, it observes, “I’m not getting my answer. The pledge said something else and now you’re saying something else,” indicating concern about inconsistencies in the submissions on behalf of the actor.Appearing for the complainant company, advocate Avneet Singh Sikka argued that Yadav had already admitted his guilt and could not avoid liability now. He submitted that the revision petition filed in 2024 was accompanied by an unexplained delay of 1,894 days and did not disclose sufficient grounds for condonation. Sikka also contended that the pecuniary liability arising from the dishonored checks was not extinguished upon completion of the sentence.
Rajpal Yadav rejected the settlement of Rs 6 crore
During the hearing, the High Court made repeated attempts to reach an amicable settlement. On the advice of the court, the complainant agreed to accept Rs.6 crore as full and final settlement.However, Yadav, appearing virtually on the last date of hearing, rejected the proposal and told the court that he had already suffered heavy financial loss. He said he was forced to sell his property and had already paid enough.The court also suggested a structured payment of ₹3 crore within a specific timeline, clarifying that it was only a judicial suggestion and not a final settlement. Despite these efforts, the parties failed to reach an agreement.Noting that valuable time of the judge was being wasted, the High Court also cautioned, “Don’t consider a judge weak if he is good to you.”
Rajpal Yadav suspended the interim sentence
The actor was granted an interim stay of sentence by the Delhi High Court, which continues pending trial.The petitions were filed by Rajpal Yadav and another against M/s Murali Projects Pvt. Ltd. and another, challenging the order passed by the trial court in multiple check dishonor cases.
Rajpal Yadav has already paid Rs 4.25 crore
Earlier, the Delhi High Court had extended the interim stay on the sentence awarded to Rajpal Yadav after observing that the actor had already paid enough money to the complainant agency.During the hearing, counsel appearing for Yadav informed the Delhi High Court that around Rs 4.25 crore had already been paid to M/s Murali Projects Pvt. Ltd. handed over a demand draft of Rs.25 lakhs to the court. Observing that the actor had already paid enough money, Justice Sharma verbally remarked that the court was not interested in sending him back to jail at that stage.The Delhi High Court refused to vacate its earlier order suspending Yadav’s sentence despite a petition filed by the complainant seeking to quash the interim relief.“He is not running away. He is still here… If the money is meant to come to you, it will,” observed the Delhi High Court, adding that the actor will either have to honor the settlement or fight the case on merits.
Delhi High Court ordered Rajpal Yadav to surrender to Jail Superintendent
Earlier, in February, the Delhi High Court had ordered Rajpal Yadav to surrender to the jail superintendent concerned, taking a stern view of his repeated failure to honor settlement promises despite multiple opportunities.Justice Sharma then observed that despite the “considerable leniency”, the actor repeatedly violated the undertaking given to the court and failed to comply with the stipulated payment deadlines from time to time.Subsequently, the actor was granted an interim stay of sentence after he deposited part of the settlement amount, paving the way for his release from jail while the High Court continued hearing the main plea. Rajpal Yadav was convicted and sentenced in 2024 in multiple check dishonor cases under the Negotiable Instruments Act.
