CCTV images from the Government Medical College (GMC) in Bhav Nagar show two resident doctors being forced to dress up as ‘murga’ in the operating theatre, along with screenshots of messages from a junior resident describing a pattern of humiliation that included staying up all night and being asked to send selfies regularly.Dr Dhruv Chauhan, the national spokesperson of the Junior Doctors Network of the Indian Medical Association, released a CCTV image showing two resident doctors being forced to dress as “murga” in the operating theatre.Sharing the photo, Chauhan wrote, “When I received the CCTV photo from GMC Bhavnagar (Gujarat), my mind froze thinking of the mental and physical shock these orthopedic residents must have felt the moment they were publicly identified as Mughal in the operating theater.”In a previous post, Chauhan also shared screenshots of messages he said were sent by a first-year orthopedic resident. In the message, the student claimed, “They made us murgha in the Old Testament.” The student further claimed, “They made us stand all night and asked us to send a selfie every half hour to make sure we didn’t sleep.” The resident also claimed to have been verbally abused by the elderly. The United Doctors’ Front (UDF) also highlighted the issue.Following the allegation, the college’s anti-obscenity committee conducted an investigation after receiving instructions from Gujarat Health Minister Praful Pansheriya. During the investigation, first-, second-, and third-year Orthopedics students, as well as faculty and support staff, provided written statements.Based on the findings, the Gujarat health department took action against six students. One student was suspended for two years, three students were suspended for one year each, and two students were suspended for six months. All six students were also directed to vacate their hostel rooms.Students who are suspended will not be allowed to participate in academic, clinical, research or any other university-related activities during the suspension, the health department said.
