But in a recent interview, he surprisingly said that he didn’t actually plan to make a love story when he started writing. He even said that ‘Jab We Met’ was not written as a romantic film. He also stated that he would someday like to make a film on the story of Radha and Krishna.
Imtiaz Ali is about romance in his films
During a conversation with ABP Live, Imtiaz was asked about the recurring theme of romance in his films. She responded by saying, “I don’t want to add romance to everything but it happens naturally, so I don’t stop it.” The filmmaker revealed that he never saw Love Aaj Kal as a romantic film. “I have never made any of my films as love stories. When Love Aaj Kal was being titled, I thought Aaj Kal would be a good name. I wonder if this is a love story? My team explained to me how they saw it as a love story but I saw it as an interpretation of love in different eras. I definitely didn’t do Jab We Met as a love story. But it comes up again and again in my films,” he said.
Imtiaz Ali draws inspiration from Indian mythology
When the conversation shifted to his future projects, Imtiaz opened up about his deep connection with Indian mythology. “There are many stories from Indian mythology that have inspired me a lot. I think I should be capable enough to create those stories,” he shared. He didn’t hesitate when pressed further to name a specific story in his mind. He said, “I have said this before. I want to do the story of Radha-Krishna.” When the interviewer pointed out that it would also essentially be a love story, Imtiaz laughed it off and responded, “It’s not just a love story. Their story has many layers. It has a profound philosophy.”

When it comes to the definition of love itself, Imtiaz shares his belief that no story can truly exist without it. “I don’t think you can make a story without love. That love can be for your race, or for someone who died, and someone is seeking revenge for them, but the story is always about love. You can show it differently,” he explained. Interestingly, despite spending his entire career exploring romance and passion on screen, Imtiaz admits that love still remains a mystery to him personally. He said, “I’m still trying to understand love and I try to answer that question with every film. I’m more confused than ever.”
