Being a newcomer, it was quite a task for Shekhar to do an intimate scene with Rekha in his first film and she was an established star. But Shekhar reveals how he made her feel so comfortable.Recalling her experience, Shekhar said that despite already being one of the biggest names in the industry, Rekha never carried the air of a superstar. “He’s done it, from the beginning. When there’s an actor who walks around with paraphernalia and says, ‘Look at me, I’m a big star,’ it becomes a problem. They have a lot of people looking after them and expect you to just sit in the corner and watch all the stardom. But he was far from it all. He would sit beside me and comfort me. So, even before I gave my shot, I was very, very comfortable,” recalled Shekhar in an interview with Screen.He also credits filmmaker Girish Karnad for helping him overcome the pressure of sharing screen space with Rekha. “He told me, ‘Look, you are playing just one character. Don’t treat her like Rekha, but another character like Vasantasena,'” Shekhar said. Talking about filming the intimate scenes, he praised Rekha’s professionalism, adding, “Being a big star, she never said, ‘Don’t touch me here’ or ‘I don’t want to do another retake’.” He was very, very natural.”Shekhar also reminded about working with Madhuri Dixit Manav Hatya (1986), directed by Sudarshan Ratan. At that time, Madhuri debuted with Abodh but was yet to achieve nationwide fame, which later came with Tejab and its iconic song “Ek Do Tin”.Recalling how he came to the project, Shekhar says, “I remember working with Madhuri in my second film. The director called me and asked, ‘Will you work with a new girl?’ I said, ‘If Rekha can work with me, why can’t I work with the new girl?’He also recalls meeting Madhuri before the start of shooting. “She was staying near me in Andheri. I wanted to meet her, so we both went to her place on a motorcycle. When I saw her, I thought, ‘Oh my God! Such a beautiful girl!’ He was a huge discovery,” he added.Looking back on his early career, Shekhar said that he never consciously avoided films that had more female leads. To be chosen as the hero opposite Rekha! He was the big star and had a big role, but I was equally important and the target,” said Shekhar.He also spoke about Naache Mayuri (1986), inspired by the real-life story of Sudha Chandran, in which he portrayed a flawed character. “It revolved around the hero losing his leg, but he still came out a winner. I played the hero, but he was negative. When he lost his leg, he left her, but came back once he became famous,” recalls the actor.Shekhar Pati reflects on his role opposite Parameshwar by sharing another memorable incident Dimple Kapadiawhere his character finally apologizes. He revealed that audiences strongly disliked his on-screen persona, which he saw as a compliment to his performance. “Even Pati Parameshwar, the film I did with Dimple Kapadia, I came back and apologised. I remember my father watching it in a theater in Jaipur, where the audience said, ‘Maro sale ko!’ He was very upset! He asked me, ‘Why do such a character?’ I said, ‘But this is the triumph of character. I wanted people to hate me,” says Shekhar.
