Born in an artist family in Pandharpur, he grew up surrounded by various musical traditions including Labanya, Gavlan and Vedic, his family troupe Bhau-Bapu Mang Narayangaonkar was run by his father and uncle and founded by his grandfather Narayan Khude. Known as ‘Tamasha Samragini’ or Tamasha Samragini, Bithabai stepped in to carry forward the family’s legacy during a difficult time in her father’s life. His talent earned him the highest recognition, including the prestigious President’s Award in both 1957 and 1990.
