What is ALS?

According to the Mayo Clinic, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a disease of the nervous system that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Also known as ALS, the disease leads to muscle weakness and other symptoms that worsen over time. It often starts in the hands, feet, arms, or legs and then spreads to other parts of the body.
