Nasiruddin Shah And Shashi Ranjan.Originally titled ‘Punjab ’95’, the film was mired in censorship-related issues for several years. Kanwaljit Singh applauded the determination of the makers

Reflecting on the film’s long-standing struggle, Kanwaljit praised the director Madhu Trehan And producers Honey and Ronnie for refusing to compromise despite years of pressure.“I was shocked because the case went on for 2.5-3 years and I really appreciate my directors and producers, Honey and Roni, for sticking to their guns and never succumbing to pressure,” Singh told IANS.The actor also recalled how the project faced setbacks despite repeated attempts to move forward. “When it was said that 127 cuts were given and you could send it to Canada, suddenly it was withdrawn from the Canada Film Festival as well. So, that’s been the case with the film for a long time.”The veteran actor questioned the anxiety surrounding the film’s release, saying that enough time has passed for people to engage in dialogue instead of fearing backlash.“Finally, they said you should let it go, ‘What are you afraid of? What’s the reaction?’ Time heals many wounds, and all that’s left to do after that is talk. You can talk and pick something. But after so long one is taking revenge like this.” In ‘Satuluj’, Kanwaljit played the role of DGP Bitta, a character inspired by former Punjab Director General of Police KPS Gill.

Kudos to Naseeruddin Shah and Shashi Ranjan

The veteran actor also shared that his portrayal in the film has received heartfelt appreciation from co-actors Shashi Ranjan and Naseeruddin Shah, which he finds deeply meaningful.“I was quite surprised when I got his (Ranjan’s) call. After that, I also got a call from Naseer (Naseeruddin Shah). He started speaking in Punjabi, which he speaks very badly. I believe he is the ‘God of acting’ and so anything coming from him has a lot of impact,” he said.

About ‘Sutlej’

Directed by Honey Trehan, ‘Sutlej’ is inspired by the life of human rights activist Jasbant Singh Khalra, who exposed alleged illegal arson and extrajudicial killings in Punjab during the militancy of the 1980s and 1990s. The film started streaming on Zee5 in India on 3 July after a long battle over certification. However, it was removed from the platform within 48 hours as the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said the film was released before completing the mandatory certification process, after which the platform was directed to remove it from its India catalog.
