India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate admitted the dressing room was left in “disbelief” after the T20 world champions suffered a 2-0 defeat against Ireland, saying the visitors were “outmatched and outsmarted” as they failed to adapt to the conditions.After losing the opening T20I by 34 runs, India fell by one run in the second match on Sunday, giving Ireland their first win over India in the T20I series.“I think there’s a bit of disbelief, we’ve just won the World Cup. We were outplayed, outplayed by a team that did their basics very well. First of all credit to Ireland and secondly learning for us (is) in terms of being able to adapt to different conditions and against different teams and that’s the biggest result of this series,” Ten Doeschate said at the post-match press conference.The former Dutch international said India did not understand the playing conditions well enough, with the strong wind playing a key role.“I think that (the conditions) was a big factor, I think that’s basically what we broke down… we just didn’t handle them well enough. The big thing was the wind, but there’s absolutely no excuses. We have to find solutions to different challenges in a different way.“Ireland did their fundamentals really well and we couldn’t fight that. We’re probably too used to a tempo style where you can hit more sixes. We have to be a lot smarter in these conditions,” he added.Ten Doeschate felt that India’s bowlers adjusted better in the second match to restrict Ireland to 154 for 8, but said the batting unit could not make the same adjustments.“I think we adjusted really well as a bowling unit today. We bowled a lot smarter and that probably reflected in the score they got on the board today. But again, both seamers and spinners were fantastic with the ball and that reflected in the economy rate.“Their pitchers are down seven and over and we’ve got to learn from that. We’ve got to adjust quicker, we want guys to make those adjustments a lot quicker,” he said.India lost early wickets during the chase but Ten Doeschate said the team would not move away from their attacking approach in the powerplay.“I think it has been a strong part of the team for the last 3-4 years. We’re really trying to dominate the power play. We want to strike that balance…obviously if you lose two wickets with no score on the board on the power play, it puts a lot of pressure on the middle order.“I’m certainly going to be very careful when I say let’s be very careful up front, that’s not the way we want to play. We want to take advantage of better options and give ourselves a better chance to dominate on the power play.”India will now travel to England, where they will play five T20Is and three ODIs, with the series starting on July 1 at Chester-le-Street.
