Ronald Koeman has resigned as Netherlands head coach following the Oranje’s shock 2026 FIFA World Cup elimination by Morocco, ending his second spell in charge after the Dutch suffered their earliest elimination from the tournament. The 63-year-old announced his decision on Tuesday, a day after the Netherlands lost 3-2 on penalties to Morocco following a 1-1 draw in their last-16 clash. It was the first time that the Dutch failed to reach at least the round of 16 in the history of the World Cup.
Koeman announces emotional departure
In a heartfelt message shared on Instagram, Koeman admitted the disappointment of the World Cup weighed heavily on him when he confirmed his resignation.“I have made the decision to end my time as coach of the Dutch national team. We all dreamed of a World Cup where we would write history. We didn’t make it. No one is more disappointed about that than I am. As a selector, you bear this responsibility. I have always felt it and I will always feel it,” Koeman wrote. The former Barcelona manager also reflected on how recent years have changed his priorities outside of football.“Furthermore, in the last few years I realized again that there are more important things than football. Football was my life, but health is priceless.”Koeman added that leaving was not an easy decision after several years of close cooperation with the team.“Precisely because I have worked so closely and intensively with this coaching staff and this group of players for so long, this was not an easy decision to make. I am grateful and would like to express my sincere gratitude for the commitment shown by everyone involved with Oranje during both of my periods as head coach.”He also revealed his desire to spend more time with his family.“I decided that now is the right time to spend more time with my wife, children and grandchildren. At this moment, it seems like the right and most natural decision.”
The historic disappointment of the World Cup
Koeman’s resignation followed one of the tournament’s biggest shocks. The Netherlands, who scored a tournament-leading 10 goals during the group stage, were held to a 1-1 draw by Morocco before losing dramatically in stoppage time.It was the third straight World Cup in which the Dutch were eliminated on penalties and ended their remarkable record of reaching at least the last 16 in each of their previous 11 World Cup appearances.During his two terms in charge, Koeman guided the Netherlands to Euro 2021, Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup, while also guiding the Oranje to the UEFA Nations League final in 2019. He oversaw 64 official internationals and steered the team to the semi-finals of Euro 2024.
The KNVB supports Koeman’s decision
The Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB) has confirmed that Koeman has informed the association that he will not continue with the contract beyond his current deal.Technical director Nigel de Jong paid tribute to the departing coach, saying: “Ronald has committed himself with full conviction over the past few years and made an important contribution to the Dutch national team. On behalf of the KNVB, I would like to thank him very much for that.”The federation also condemned the racist and discriminatory abuse of several Dutch players after the defeat, stressing that “racism and discrimination have no place anywhere: not in football, not on the Internet, not in our society.”
