Arshad Warsi Has entertained audiences for decades with memorable comic characters across franchises like ‘Munna Bhai MBBS’, ‘Golmaal’ and ‘Dhamal’. While many associate the actor with his impeccable comic timing, Warsi believes the secret lies in staying true to each character without repeating a successful formula. As he gears up for the release of ‘Pritam and Pedro’, the actor reflects on why every comedy role demands a completely different approach.
Each comedy character belongs to his own world
Portraying fan-favourite characters like Circuit, Madhav and Adi, Arshad says he never tries to differentiate them from himself. According to him, the difference comes entirely from the writing and the filmmaker’s perspective.Explaining his philosophy, he says, “A circuit has to make the audience laugh differently than Gopal or Madhav. But it’s not about deciding to separate them. It’s about how the character is written. I have to do that character exactly as the director or writer envisioned it. That’s what organic humor brings out.”He also emphasized that each franchise has its own identity and rhythm, making it impossible to replace a character in another universe.I can’t circuit in ‘noise’. It just won’t fit. The line will not fit. Mentality and sensibility simply do not match. Each character has its own holy place. You have to look at it strictly from the cinematographic point of view, the story point of view and the writer-director point of view. You shouldn’t bother with it.”
Rajkumar Hirani Its comedy works differently
Warsi, who reunited with Rajkumar Hirani with ‘Pritam and Pedro’, says the filmmaker’s brand of humor is different from conventional slapstick. Instead of relying on punchlines, Hirani creates comedy by adding subtle humor to emotionally intense situations.Talking to Variety India about the filmmaker’s style, Arshad shared, “Raju’s comedies are unlike any of them. It’s a very different place. It’s more natural, more realistic and deeply human. I can take a sequence from his movies and give it to you and that same sequence can be shot very seriously. It’s supposed to be incredibly dramatic and serious and it gives a light touch. Doing so suddenly changes the entire dynamic of the scene. That’s his specialty—most people can’t do that.”Hinting at what viewers can expect from ‘Pritam and Pedro’, he added, “We have those sequences in this show as well. There’s a serious robbery going on, but in the back of your mind, you have a small smile on your face because you see something strange happening; something that’s actually very vivid and real.” I enjoy doing all these styles, to be honest.”
Why did Arshad forget to play the circuit?
During the launch of ‘Pritam and Pedro’, Rajkumar Hirani shared a funny story from the sets of ‘Lage Raho Munna Bhai’. According to the filmmaker, Arshad initially struggled to return to the circuit personality after a long gap between two films.Recalling the incident, Hirani said, “There was a time when Arshad actually forgot how to play the circuit. ‘Munna Bhai MBBS’ three years later. We were shooting for the first day of ‘Lage Raho Munna Bhai’. I looked at him through the monitor and said, Arshad, circuit na laga raha hai, yaar. Kuch separate ho raha hai.’ He looked at me and said, ‘Han yaar, kuch alard ho raha hai.’ He actually found a DVD of the first film in his vanity van, sat there for half an hour watching himself play the character, and only then did he get back into the groove.“Warsi admits that forgetting his previous roles is actually part of his process.“That’s just how I work. You do your work, you completely forget about it and you move on to the next one. You have to clear your mind completely to think about the next character.”
Arshad’s next film ‘Pritam and Pedro’
After appearing in ‘Welcome to the Jungle’, Arshad will next be seen in ‘Pritam and Pedro’ directed by Avinash Arun and directed by Rajkumar Hirani. The series stars Veer alongside Hirani Warsi and follows the unlikely partnership between Pedro Gonsalves, an old-school Goan police officer, and Pritam, a young cyber expert, as they investigate a high-stakes digital kidnapping orchestrated by a cyber criminal led by Vikrant Massey.Blending crime, comedy and generational conflict, ‘Pritam and Pedro’ promises to showcase another side of Arshad Warsi’s comic repertoire and stays true to his belief that every character deserves its own unique identity.
