The performance against DR Congo raised several concerns. Despite boasting one of the strongest midfields in international football, Portugal struggled to create meaningful chances and managed just one shot on target throughout the competition. The result increased the pressure ahead of what many expected to be a simple encounter.
Much of the attention is, of course, focused on Cristiano Ronaldo. The 41-year-old captain remains Portugal’s all-time leading goalscorer with 147 goals in 229 appearances, but his recent form at major tournaments has become a talking point. Ronaldo has now gone 10 consecutive FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship appearances without scoring, while providing just one assist in that span.
His subdued display against DR Congo only added to the debate. Ronaldo registered 25 touches, failed to hit the target with any of his three shots and won only one duel. Despite this, Portugal defender Rúben Dias played down concerns about the veteran striker, insisting that criticism aimed at Ronaldo is simply part of football and not something that affects the team internally.
Uzbekistan arrive as underdogs, but with true conviction. After losing to Colombia in their opening game, they know another defeat would likely end their hopes of progressing. Veteran forward Eldor Shomurodov will spearhead the attack, while Abbosbek Fayzullaev and Premier League defender Abdukodir Khusanov provide quality on both sides of the pitch.
Dias’ fitness also remains a major talking point after he missed the opening game through injury.
With qualification implications already looming and pressure mounting around their stars, Portugal know only a win will meet expectations as they look to restart their World Cup campaign against a determined Uzbekistan side.
