Legal proceedings connected with its death Zubin Garg A new phase has entered. D Supreme Court of India Event organizer Shyam Kanu issued the notice on the bail plea filed by Mahant. The case relates to the investigation into Garg’s death in September 2025 while on a yacht trip to Singapore. A bench of Justice BV Nagarathna and Justice Jaimalya Bagchir directed the state Assam The notice to respond was made returnable by the end of July.
He applied for bail after the High Court rejected it
As reported by Live Law, the accused organizer approached the Supreme Court after the Gauhati High Court rejected his bail plea on May 29. Mahant has been in custody since October 1, 2025. His arrest is linked to an ongoing investigation into the incident. Senior advocate during the hearing Siddhartha Dave argues for bail. He said, “One died due to drowning. There is no flight risk, I have no money, I have my passport,” while requesting release from custody. The defense maintained that there was no flight risk.
Prosecution complaint and case structure
Investigators are not treating the incident as an accidental drowning. Instead, they described it as part of a larger alleged conspiracy. The chargesheet contains several sections of the Indian Penal Code. These include provisions relating to murder, felony murder, criminal conspiracy, fraud, extortion, criminal breach of trust and destruction of evidence. Authorities alleged that the organizer played a role in the incident during a yacht trip to Singapore.
Security concerns and investigative demands
The prosecution alleged that Zubin Garg was taken on the yacht trip despite known medical concerns. He was reportedly suffering from epilepsy. It is also claimed that he underwent treatment to detoxify alcohol. Officials also said he was medically advised to avoid alcohol, fire exposure and water-related activities. Nevertheless, a yacht excursion was arranged where alcohol was allegedly served. The event was associated with the North East India Festival held in Singapore.The Gauhati High Court had earlier rejected the bail plea citing prima facie evidence of involvement in the alleged conspiracy. It observed that there were not adequate safety measures in place during the voyage of the yacht. The court also noted concerns about the possibility of witness tampering and absconding. The High Court referred about 394 witnesses in this case. It also said that the matter is still at the stage of consideration of charges. The court held that custody of nearly eight months did not amount to prolonged detention. A special court has already been constituted to conduct the trial.
Zubin Garg’s legacy
Zubin Garg was a widely respected musician, composer and performer. He has worked extensively in Assamese, Bengali and Hindi music industries. He is considered a major cultural figure in Indian music. He died in September 2025 at the age of 52 after a drowning near Lazarus Island, Singapore. He was in the country as part of a cultural delegation for the Northeast India Festival.
