Thousands of students who are passionate about mathematics can now start their journey in India’s most prestigious mathematics competition. Homi Bhabha Center for Science Education (HBCSE) has opened registration for the Indian Olympiad Qualifiers in Mathematics (IOQM) 2026, the first phase of the Indian Mathematical Olympiad programme.The exam will be conducted on September 6, 2026, as a screening test for students seeking admission to the higher stages of the Olympiad system. Applications can be submitted through the IOQM official portal.For many students, exams are just another test. It is the starting point of a highly competitive academic route, producing some of India’s best young mathematicians and representing India in international mathematical competitions.
Registration timetable announced
HBCSE has announced a detailed timetable for the registration process. Center registration opens on June 1 and will remain open until June 26, 2026. Student registration through the registration center will last until July 25.Students who are eligible for online direct registration can complete registration between June 29 and July 25, 2026. Candidates are advised to complete the registration process before the deadline to avoid last-minute difficulties.
Who can apply?
The exam is open to students in grades 8 to 12. Candidates must be born between August 1, 2007 and July 31, 2014 to be eligible to take the exam. They must be eligible to hold an Indian passport and have been living and studying in India since 2024.OCI cardholders may also take the exam, subject to existing court orders and conditions related to international representation.Candidates shall not be eligible to appear or plan to appear for the Class 12 Board Examination before October 30, 2026. They should also not start or plan to start studying at a university or equivalent institution before 1 June 2027.
How to register
One can apply for this exam from the IOQM official website and select the correct registration option.Depending on the eligibility criteria, students can register on their own through an authorized center or apply directly on their own.This includes providing all details, uploading required documents, paying fees and completing the application form. After successfully submitting an application, students must retain a copy of the confirmation letter.
What will be tested on the exam?
The syllabus is mainly based on NCERT Mathematics learned by students of classes 8 to 12. However, the exam covers much more than what is taught in class.Algebra, geometry, combinatorics, and number theory are some of the areas that students need to know in detail.
