Neil himself preferred a quiet life away from fame
Despite being an international star, Neil often said that he didn’t chase celebrity status. Instead, he prefers to spend time on his Central Otago estate, home to his award-winning winery, two paddocks and a large collection of farm animals.Many of his animals became internet darlings after Neil regularly featured them in hilarious social media videos, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Animals ranging from ducks and pigs to sheep and cattle were named after his friends and colleagues, including Michael Caine, Meryl Streep, Graham Norton and Helena Bonham Carter.Speaking to the Chicago Tribune in 1995, Neal reflected on his unorthodox approach to fame.“I never had an image, nor did I nurture or want one, which meant I had great freedom to do whatever appealed to me at the time.”
His family was largely out of the spotlight
Neil was known to keep his personal life private. He married Japanese makeup artist Noriko Watanabe in 1989 after the pair met while working on Dead Calm, which also starred Nicole Kidman.Watanabe has built a successful career in the film industry, working on acclaimed productions including Hack’s Ridge, Silence and The Power of the Dog, as well as working as a personal makeup artist to stars including Nicole Kidman and Liam Neeson.The couple separated in 2017 after nearly three decades together.Before his marriage, Neil was in a long-term relationship with his Woman III co-star New Zealand actress Lisa Harrow. They welcomed a son together during their relationship.
Sam Neill was the father of four children
Neil is survived by four children.His eldest son Andrew was put up for adoption when the actor was in his early twenties. After 25 years of searching for each other, the two meet again.Speaking to The Times in 2014, Neill described their reunion as meaningful but a far cry from the sentimental scenes often depicted in films.“No one cries in anyone’s lap; it’s just too big,” he said.Neil also shares a son, Tim, with Lisa Harrow.With Watanabe, she had a daughter, Elena, and also adopted her daughter from a previous relationship, Maiko.Elena briefly appeared in acting projects before starting a career as a tattoo artist in Melbourne, Australia. His farm became his greatest passion
Although millions knew him as one of Hollywood’s most recognizable actors, Neal often said that his happiest moments were spent tending to his farm and making wine.His winery, Two Paddocks, was founded in 1993 and has gained international recognition.When talking about his vineyard, Neill once joked that he wanted people to respect his wine more than his celebrity status.“My wine has more dimensions than I can expect.
