While neither Mithun nor Sridevi have publicly confirmed that they are married, senior entertainment journalist Jyoti Venkatesh has now revisited those claims, alleging that the two lived together briefly as husband and wife.Speaking to Hindi Rush, Venkatesh claimed that the actors shared a domestic life for a short time.“If you’re asking if they shared a close bond, they were actually living together as a married couple for about three months,” he said.
‘Everybody Knew They Were Together’
Recalling an outdoor shoot, Venkatesh said he witnessed the episode himself.“Mithun had an outdoor shoot that I went to. Sridevi never came to the set. She stayed in the room, but everyone knew they were together,” he recalls.The veteran journalist also shared his light-heartedness with Mithun at that time.“Mithun was a good friend of mine. I even used to joke with him. I said, ‘Mithun sir, now you must have learned Tamil.’ He immediately understood what I was implying and said, ‘Please don’t speak to me in Tamil. Just ask me how I am.’ The reference was, of course, to Sridevi.”
Allegations of why the relationship did not last
When asked why the relationship ended, Venkatesh pointed to compatibility issues and the circumstances surrounding the two stars at the time.“There were compatibility issues. Also, at that time, Sridevi was Sridevi. Mithun was a successful actor, but Sridevi had become a phenomenon.”He further added, “Earlier Mithun had gone through several relationships, so then people felt that he cannot be trusted in a real relationship.”However, Venkatesh points out that Mithun’s marriage with Yogita Bali ultimately stood the test of time.“Even when he married Yogita Bali after divorcing his first wife Helena Luke, many didn’t believe the marriage would last. But they have been married for many years now. They have three sons and an adopted daughter.”
A long-standing rumour
Although neither Mithun nor Sridevi confirmed their marriage, rumors of their relationship first surfaced in the late 1980s. According to long-circulating reports, the two met on the sets of Jaag Insan in the early 1980s, where their on-screen chemistry reportedly blossomed into a real-life romance.Several reports over the years have claimed that the actors secretly married in 1985 and were together until 1988. At that time though, Mithun was already married to Yogita Bali, whom he married after divorcing his first wife Helena Luke. The alleged affair is also said to have created a major crisis in Mithun and Yogita’s married life.The report also claimed that Sridevi finally ended the relationship after realizing that Mithun would not leave his wife. He later married producer Boney Kapoor in 1996 and the couple welcomed daughters Janhvi Kapoor and Khushi Kapoor, both of whom are now actors.Neither Mithun Chakraborty nor Sridevi publicly confirmed these reports and the alleged marriage has been the subject of speculation for decades.
