What exactly happened?
According to Mumbai PoliceThe jewelery was hired from two Mumbai-based jewelers specially for the event and was found missing soon after the team landed in New York. Mumbai’s Sahar police station registered a case under Section 303(2) of the Indian Penal Code (BNS) against an unidentified person and initiated a formal investigation into the matter, reported by IANS.Rhea Kapoor was invited to attend the Met Gala fashion event in New York on April 29, and her entire team, including makeup artist Savleen Singh, who has worked with her for the past seven years, traveled with her. For the event, two pairs of expensive earrings were hired from Mehta Jewelers and Goenka Jewelers in Mumbai and Savleen Singh carried both jewelery boxes in her handbag throughout the trip.The team started their journey on April 27 at 10:25 pm, boarding an Emirates flight from Mumbai to Dubai before flying to New York. They arrived at John F. Kennedy International Airport at 5:30 pm on April 28 and later checked-in at the Pierre Hotel in New York.
The jewelry box was found empty
When Savleen Singh opened the jewelry boxes in his hotel room to give earrings to a gang member named Shireen, he discovered that both boxes were empty. Among the missing items were emerald-stone diamond gold earrings worth Rs 66 lakh from Mehta Jewellers, and Zambian emerald-stone gold bordered earrings worth Rs 69 lakh from Goenka Jewellers, taking the total value of the stolen jewelery to Rs 1.35 crore.
FIR registered, investigation underway
After returning to Mumbai, Savleen Singh filed a complaint at the Sahar police station, after which an FIR was registered under Section 303(2) of the BNS for theft. Police officials have confirmed that the case has been registered based on her complaint regarding earrings rented by Rhea Kapoor for her New York appearance.Investigators are now reviewing the entire timeline of flight travel from Mumbai airport to hotel stays in New York, to determine whether the theft occurred at the airport, during the flight or after the group’s arrival in the city.
