Fans have been eagerly awaiting the comeback for nearly two decades Sanjay DuttIts Munna and Arshad Warsiits circuit. While speculations surrounding the fate of ‘Munna Bhai 3’ have surfaced repeatedly over the years, the filmmakers Rajkumar Hirani And actor Arshad Warsi has now clarified that the project is very much alive and under active development.According to Hindustan Times, speaking during the promotion of their upcoming streaming venture ‘Pritam and Pedro’, the duo revealed that the problem was not lack of ideas but finding a perfect story that could match the legacy of the franchise.
The search for the exact story of Rajkumar Hirani continues
The beloved franchise’s journey began in 2003 with ‘Munna Bhai MBBS’, followed by the massively successful ‘Lage Raho Munna Bhai’ in 2006. Both films garnered critical acclaim and built a loyal fan base, with exceptional anticipation for the third installment.Rajkumar Hirani admits that conceptualizing new adventures for Munna and the circuit was not difficult. The challenge, according to him, is to create a narrative that is equally engaging from start to finish.Explaining the delay, he said, “If you want to see Munna Bhai till break, I can make five films right now. Because I don’t have a story beyond that.”
Why did Rajkumar Hirani not agree to do the sequel?
Despite knowing that the third installment will create tremendous excitement at the box office, Hirani insists that commercial success alone cannot be the reason for making another film in the franchise.“Actually, I’d like to make one. Someone else in my place might have said, ‘Write any script, it’ll get a huge opening and make hard money.’ But I don’t want to do that. We made two great films; If I only cared about money, I would have made four or five versions by now. It needs to at least match the standards of what we already have. That’s where I get stuck,” he said. The filmmaker insists that maintaining the standards established by the first two films is his biggest priority.
Arshad Warsi said three scripts already exist
Contrary to the widespread perception that the project lacks a script, Arshad Warsi revealed that multiple versions of the story have already been written.“There are actually three very unfinished scripts sitting there. And all three are honestly better than most scripts I’ve heard – I’m not kidding. Each of them has elements that grab your attention immediately. The ideas and scenes are absolutely beautiful,” he shared.According to Warsi, each draft contains strong emotional and dramatic moments, but each still lacks a crucial element needed to complete the narrative. Arshad also explained that the development process has stalled as the writers search for a perfect resolution that ties everything together.“It’s just missing that one little link, that one little piece of the jigsaw puzzle. Once it fits into place, we’ll be good to go. Otherwise, the termination is missing somewhere, or it’s not connecting smoothly. Eventually, he will find it,” he added. The actor is confident that Hirani will finally break the formula and deliver a worthy continuation of the franchise.Unexpected success of GandhigiriDuring the conversation, Hirani also reflected on how some of the franchise’s most iconic moments became cultural phenomena without any deliberate planning.“You don’t sit back and write, ‘People will remember Jadu ki Jhappi or Gandhigiri.’ If you start writing like that, it becomes very manipulative,” he said. The director recalled how the team once believed another dialogue from ‘Lage Raho Munna Bhai’ would be a hit with the audience. However, it was the idea of Gandhigiri that unexpectedly resonated across the country and became part of popular culture.“We had a track where Lucky Singh is a corrupt producer and has to adapt to Gandhigiri. We wrote a line where Munna and Circuit told him, ‘Do the exact opposite of what you usually do in life.’ We used that line a few times in the film and thought it could be caught as a popular catchphrase. To this day I don’t think anyone remembers that dialogue! On the other hand, we thought the word Gandhigiri might not catch on, but it has become a huge phenomenon. You just have to write with your gut and put it away,” he recalled.
Arshad’s thrilling memories of the game circuit
A lighter moment in the discussion came when Arshad Warsi revealed that he rarely remembers his performances after a project is over.“I literally forgot my work as soon as I finished the shoot. Raju knows that I didn’t know how I acted for Munna Bhai 2 (‘Lage Raho Munna Bhai’)! They had to show me the tape of the first film and say, ‘Dude, look, you acted like that,’ and then I had to literally imitate myself.”Her candid confessions charmed everyone and gave a glimpse of her easy-going approach to acting.
Hopes remain for the return of Munna and the circuit
Although ‘Munna Bhai 3’ is yet to go into production, Hirani confirmed that talks are still on with Sanjay Dutt, Arshad Warsi and writer Abhijit Joshi. The team continues to explore different ideas while searching for the final element that can elevate the film to the level expected by the audience.Ending on an optimistic note, Hirani assured fans that the beloved characters have not been abandoned.“At some point, it’s bound to happen,” he said. For now, the wait continues, but the makers insist that ‘Munna Bhai 3’ is far from over and that one of Hindi cinema’s favorite on-screen pairs may finally reunite.
