Julian Nagelsmann has resigned as Germany head coach following the team’s shock exit from the FIFA World Cup, ending his tenure less than three years after taking charge. The German Football Association (DFB) confirmed Nagelsmann’s resignation on Friday, four days after Germany were knocked out by Paraguay in the round of 16 following a 1-1 draw on penalties. The result marked Germany’s third consecutive World Cup appearance that ended before the round of 16.His resignation followed discussions with the union. Nagelsmann has previously indicated his intention to stay despite having two years left on his contract, which has reportedly made him one of the highest-paid coaches at the World Cup.His future came under scrutiny during the tournament, with criticism of his tactics and team selection.Germany’s loss to Paraguay was also their first loss on penalties at the FIFA World Cup. The result denied them a place in the round of 16, where they would face France.Germany finished top of their group after wins over Curacao and Ivory Coast. However, in the last game of the group stage, they looked unconvincing in the defeat against Ecuador.Nagelsmann also faced questions about his decision to bring veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer back into the starting line-up and for regularly using Joshua Kimmich at right-back instead of his preferred role in midfield.Nagelsmann was appointed Germany coach in September 2023. Prior to this World Cup campaign, he also guided the team to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024.According to reports, former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp is one of the leading candidates to replace him.
