England took an incredible 4-0 lead at half-time through Declan Rice, Ezri Konsa and a brace from Bukaya Saka, leaving France facing an embarrassing defeat.Mbappé ignited the comeback three minutes after the restart, finishing confidently in the 48th minute to make it 4-1.Bradley Barcola added the Frenchman’s second in the 54th minute before Mbappé struck again in the 66th minute to reduce England’s lead to 4-3 and dramatically age the race for the Golden Boot.England eventually secured a third through an 87th-minute penalty from Saka, before Ousmane Dembélé pulled one back in injury time to make it 5-4. Jude Bellingham then sealed the deal with a late goal to make it 6-4, but Mbappé’s individual achievements remained the biggest talking point.

Mbappé also became the outright record holder for most goals without a penalty in World Cup history, moving to 19 and surpassing Messi’s previous mark of 17.
