Veteran filmmaker B. Subhash recently shared memories of making ‘Disco Dancer’, the film that was adapted Mithun Chakraborty A household name and created one of the most recognizable characters in Indian cinema. Appearing on a television reality show, the director looked back at the journey behind the blockbuster and the events that shaped its success.The filmmaker spoke on ‘India’s Best Dancer Season 5’ about the genesis of the project, the creation of Jimmy and the phenomenal popularity of the film in different parts of the world.
Promise b. Subhash gave to Mithun Chakraborty
According to IANS, during the conversation, Subhash recalled meeting Mithun Chakraborty when the actor was still looking for a big break. The director said that he immediately recognized the actor’s potential and assured him that bigger opportunities await him.Sharing memories b. Subhash said, “Mithun abit pareshan tha. I was filming ‘Takdir Ka Badsha’. May bola, ‘Don’t worry, one day film banaunga tumhare saath. You are going to be a big star.’ May Bola ‘Disco Dancer’. I felt ki uski ankhon me na jhalak a gayi. That’s how I started with him.” (Mithun was a bit worried then. I was working on a film called Takdeer Ka Badsha. I told him, ‘Don’t worry, one day I will do a film with you. You’re going to be a big star.’ I mentioned the disco dancer. I felt a spark in his eyes at that moment. Thus began my journey with him.)According to the filmmaker, that conversation sparked a partnership that would eventually create one of the era’s most iconic films.
B Subhash reveals how the title track took shape
Subhash also revealed how the concept behind the disco dancer evolved during the creative process. He explained that a common English phrase inspired an idea that later became closely associated with the film’s musical identity.Recalling the moment, she shared, “Us time kya likha tha: ‘My mother says I sang when I couldn’t talk. I danced when I couldn’t even walk.’ Dhar she is a disco dancer nanny. Toh Mene Anjan Sahib Ko Diya. Bahot achha praakya dya anhon.” (Then, I wrote: ‘My mother said I sang when I couldn’t talk. I danced when I couldn’t even walk.’ That’s where the idea of the disco dancer came from. Then I shared it with Anjan Sahib and he responded very positively.)The filmmaker also explained that the project is of special significance as it represents an important milestone in his career. He wanted every department to showcase the best talent available.Talking about the title and the team behind the film, he said, “D se hota hai dance, I se hota hai item, s hota hai singer, si se hota hai chorus, o se ata hai orchestra. Yeh badi dami film thi mere liye. Meri pehli production thi, pehli may direction ke best time. It was my first production and my first film directed. So I wanted the best. At that time, the best choreographer was Suresh Bhatt ji.”)
Jimmy became a global phenomenon
The dialogue also highlights the extraordinary international appeal enjoyed by Mithun Chakraborty’s character Jimmy. Choreographer-director Remo D’Souza recalls witnessing the actor’s popularity during a shoot in Russia.Remo said, “Hum Russia me shoot kar rahe Salman sir ki film lucky, aur Usme Mithunda sir ve the film me. Lekin jis din me set pe gaya na, us din kuch alag hi ved thi. Phir mane bola, ‘Ye log kaun hai?’ Oh bole, ‘Jimmy ko hum dohane aye hai.’ Fir May Bola, ‘Jimmy Kaun?’ Oh logan ne bola, ‘Mithunda sir boite hue hai udhaar.'” (“We were shooting in Russia for Salman sir’s film Lucky, and Mithun Dao was a part of the film. But the day I came to the set, it was unusually crowded. So I asked, ‘Who are these people?’ They replied, ‘We’re here to see Jimmy.’ Then I asked, ‘Who is Jimmy?’ They pointed to Mithun Da and said, ‘Mithun sir is sitting.’)Subhash also shared a memorable experience from China, where the Jimmy Jimmy song continues to unite fans despite differences in language and culture.Recalling that moment, he says, “Jimi jimmy’ oh log ne apai bhasha me bola. 100 people in 10 minutes. So they make me stand between them and make a round, and sing ‘Jimmy Jimmy’ all the time. It’s a rare moment when your work is appreciated by people who don’t know our language.” (“They were saying ‘Jimmy Jimmy’ in their own language. Within 10 minutes, about 100 people had gathered.
