what drive Manoj Vajpayee’s choice of film
In a candid conversation with Hindustan Times, Manoj opened up about what drives his film choices and, it turns out, it all comes down to personal fulfillment. When asked if his inclination towards independent cinema was a deliberate move, the actor didn’t hesitate. “Actually, if I tell you, you won’t believe it, mera maan lagata hai,” he said, adding that the real thrill for him lies in shocking even those closest to him. “I enjoy my performance a lot when I do something that even people close to me wonder, like ‘Is this Manoj Bajpayee?’ It’s a kick,” he shared. The crowd of wonderful people, he explained, was the force that pushed him away from the mainstream. “So for that kick, I do middle-of-the-road movies or independent movies,” adds Vajpayee.
Manoj Bajpayee admits that the comfort of big budget films is real
Vajpayee has also not shied away from acknowledging the lure of big-budget productions, admitting that such offers often land on his plate. “Mere paas mein big budget film bahut ati hai,” he said. With a touch of humor, he paints a rather comfortable picture of what it might be like to work on a mainstream project — a far cry from the grind of performance-heavy indie films. “Aapko jana hai. Badhiya si van mei baithunga. Achi-Achi Cheese Order Karonga. Kya stress lane ki zarurat nahi hai?” (You have to go. I’ll sit in a nice place and order some great stuff. No need to stress, right?) he quipped, poking fun at the relatively relaxed atmosphere that big productions can sometimes offer. He even went on to describe the 40 or 50 day stretch “even though he stretched 40 or 50 days as a specific commercial film,” quick to add that whatever the project, work is treated casually. There was nothing he could allow himself to do.
Manoj Vajpayee says hard work is non-negotiable
The actor clarified that he never compromises on hard work, no matter how big or small the film. “No, of course, I will work hard. When guli ayega toh mehnat karunga hai. Mehnat karna mere dna mein hai,” (No, of course, I will work hard. When the opportunity comes, I will definitely give my all. Giving my all is in my DNA) he said. However, the actor spoke candidly about feeling the weight of the years spent on the intense and demanding role. “The temptation is happening because I’ve invested so much in these films that I’m getting a little tired with age and with the intensity,” he admits, giving a rare and honest peek into the fatigue that comes with such a deeply committed career.
