India has lost one of its most popular folk singers with the demise of Padma Vibhushan Tijan Bai.The legendary Pandavani carrier died at the age of 70 after battling a long illness, as reported by PTI. He breathed his last at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Raipur, where he had been undergoing treatment for weeks, as reported by Aaj Tak.Doctors at AIIMS confirmed his death after his condition deteriorated in the morning.
Hospitalization after health complications
Tijan Bye was admitted to AIIMS in Raipur on May 27 this year after experiencing shortness of breath and severe weakness. Doctors treating the veteran artiste had earlier said that he was suffering from life-threatening complications from multiple pre-existing medical conditions.According to hospital authorities, his health deteriorated significantly around 3:15 am on Saturday. He could not be saved despite medical treatment.
Forerunner of the Pandavas
Born in 1956 in Goniari village in Durg district of Chhattisgarh, Tijan Bai dedicated his life to the preservation and promotion of Pandavani, the traditional storytelling act based on the Mahabharata.
A career decorated with prestigious honors
The Indian government honored the veteran artist with the Padma Shri in 1988, followed by the Sangeet Nataka Akademi Award in 1995. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2003, the same year he also received an honorary Doctor of Letters (D.Litt) from Bilaspur University.He received the MS Subbalakshmi Centenary Award in 2016, the prestigious Fukuoka Award in 2018 and the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second highest civilian honor in 2019.Veteran artist Tijan Bai’s journey from a small village in Chhattisgarh to becoming one of India’s most celebrated cultural ambassadors is surely inspiring.
