Netflix has canceled ‘The Boroughs’, marking another disappointing cancellation for fans invested in the sci-fi series. The decision comes despite early viewership and critical acclaim, as well as creators Jeffrey Addis and Will Matthews publicly revealing their vision for a three-season run.According to Forbes, the cancellation is particularly notable because a writer’s room for Season 2 was already underway when the decision was made.
What was the ‘borough’ about
The series follows retirees as they investigate a monster infestation in their senior living community. Featuring an ensemble cast with cast Alfre WoodardAlfred Molina and Geena Davis, and the show mixes elements of comedy, adventure and occasional horror in what many have described as compelling viewing.
The number of viewers that sealed his fate
Despite a strong initial reception, the show’s viewership declined sharply between the first and second weeks. The series had already hit 9.5 million views in its first week, but then dropped to 3.7 million views in week 2, which apparently wasn’t enough to keep the platform happy.
Alfre Woodard and Alfred Molina star as retired men investigating mysterious happenings in their senior living community in ‘The Borough’.
The cancellation is part of the metrics-driven success of the streaming service, which has been criticized for focusing on cost-to-viewer ratios and completion rates over critical reception and cultural impact.
A part of an overall trend
One of several sci-fi and drama series left unfinished on the platform, along with ‘Altered Carbon’ and ‘1899’, is The Borough, created by ‘Dark’ producer/creators Wakefield Smith and Brian King.
