NEW DELHI: Former Australian opener David Warner pleaded guilty to drink-driving after being stopped during a random breathalyzer test in Sydney in April, the BBC reports.Warner’s lawyer, Bobby Hill, confirmed that the former Australian cricketer pleaded guilty to the charges.Warner was charged after failing a random roadside breathalyzer in Sydney’s eastern suburbs on April 5. Police later took him to Maroubra police station, where his blood alcohol content was measured at 0.104, more than twice the legal limit.“The parties are arguing the facts,” Hill told the court.“He accepts that it was a reckless decision, a stupid decision to get in his car instead of taking an Uber,” Hill said.“It is not a crime to drink a glass of wine on the day of the Lord’s resurrection. In fact, some would consider it completely appropriate,” said the lawyer.“His crime, as I said, was choosing stupid plan A over plan B,” he said.
Sentencing on August 18
Warner will be sentenced on August 18. He faces a driving ban of at least six months, a possible fine of up to A$2,200 and a maximum jail term of nine months.
Another controversy for Warner
The former Australian opener has already been embroiled in several high-profile controversies.In 2018, he received a 12-month ban for a ball-tampering scandal in South Africa after Cricket Australia revealed he had hatched a plan to change the condition of the ball using sandpaper. The incident also left him permanently ineligible for national team manager roles.In 2013, Warner was suspended after punching England striker Joe Root during an incident in Birmingham.
