A mural celebrating Spain’s World Cup hero Ferran Torres has been vandalized less than 24 hours after it appeared in Barcelona, according to a report by Spanish outlet Dairo AS. The artwork, created by Barcelona-based street artist TVBoy in the city’s Gràcia district, paid tribute to Torres after he scored the winning goal in Spain’s victory over Argentina in the 2026 World Cup final. The mural showed Torres kissing the World Cup trophy with the words “Making History” and two stars representing Spain’s two world titles. It also came after Torres celebrated the title wearing a hat emblazoned with the words “Let’s make Spain great again”.Shortly after it was discovered, the mural was painted over several times. The first graffiti read “P*** Espanya”, before it was replaced with “Espanya”.By Wednesday morning, the wall read “volem seleccions catalanes” (“we want Catalan national teams”), reflecting ongoing political tensions over Catalan identity.Barcelona City Council later stepped in, cleaned the wall and painted it black.TVBoy said the mural had already made an impression before it was vandalized. Recalling the moment while he was taking the picture, he said: “A girl walked by and shouted; ‘Mom, it’s Ferran Torres!’ I smiled. That’s when I realized that art also connects generations.”Despite lasting just over a day, the mural sparked conversations beyond football, highlighting how sport, art and politics are often intertwined in Barcelona.
