Seven weeks after the release, the makers have officially announced the final Tamil Nadu box office collection of the film. According to an official announcement by Tamil Nadu distributor Shakti Film Factory, ‘Karuppu’ has grossed Rs 191 crore in the state, making it one of the highest grossing Tamil films in the region. The film has shown remarkable consistency during its run by collecting Rs 60 crore in its first three days, Rs 100 crore in its first week, Rs 150 crore in just 13 days and Rs 175 crore in its 20th day. It has now added another Rs 16 crore to close its Tamil Nadu theatrical business at Rs 191 crore, failing to reach 200 crore, which would be a first for a Suriya film.
Strong word of mouth drove the film’s long box office run
Released on May 15, ‘Karuppu’ has been well received by both family audiences and fans, giving it a long run in theatres. Still, despite its June 12 release on the OTT platform, ‘Karuppu’ attracted viewers in few theatres. It was a result of good reviews, repeat viewings and weekend box office earnings.
