Javed Jaffery He has long been admired for his versatility as an actor, dancer and performer, but like many of his contemporaries he never made it to Bollywood’s A-list. Looking back on his career, the actor believes the reason had less to do with talent and more to do with the ecosystem of the industry, admitting that he didn’t play the PR game or align himself with influential groups.Javed was asked why he never achieved A-list status despite his immense popularity in the 1990s. Answering candidly, he said in an interview with Screen, “I think it depends on how you are packaged. There is also PR involved because the industry has its own web. There are times when there is a negative thing about you, so you need a reality check or a positive thing about you.”Reflecting on his own choices, he added, “I failed in some ways. I wasn’t part of a team either. Also, if you’re a big hit, nobody argues with you. Nothing like success. Like it happened. Salman Khan. He came up with Bibi Ho Toh Ic (1988) and people dropped him.”Javed used Salman Khan’s career as an example of how a blockbuster can completely change an actor’s position in the industry. “Then Maine Pyaar Kiya (1989) happened, and then everyone was chasing him. It’s the same Salman Khan! It’s not like he’s doing anything different from what he’s doing in Bibi Ho To Asi. But it’s just success. And then, of course, you grow up with it. From that point of view, I’ve never had a big hit.”When reminded that his first film, Subhash GhaiHis ‘Mary Jung’ (1985), was a commercial success and his song ‘Bole Baby Bol’ became a huge hit, Javed noted that his familiarity with the audience shaped the way the industry perceived him. “I was launched as a villain! Subhash Ghai sahib was the most successful director then. NN Sippy sahib was one of the top producers then.”He went on to explain that filmmakers tend to see him through that lens. “So, everyone thought if they were going to cast me as the villain, I should go ahead. That verdict had already passed. To argue with that, someone had to make a fun musical film, as they probably did. God will give South but they didn’t, and I didn’t pitch myself. But I don’t think too much about it, honestly,” he concluded.On the work front, Javed Jaffery does not reprise his role as Manav in ‘Dhamal 4’. Directed by Indra Kumar, the comedy also stars Ajay Devgan, Riteish Deshmukh and Arshad Warsi. The film released in theaters worldwide on 10 July 2026.
