Vijay’s ‘Jana Nayagan’ opened to an unprecedented fan frenzy as audiences thronged theaters for the actor’s first release since becoming Tamil Nadu Chief Minister. However, hours before the film’s theatrical debut, a viral video from a theater in Namakkal sparked a fresh controversy over alleged overpricing of tickets. The clip has sparked massive controversy on social media, with fans questioning whether theaters are abiding by government-sanctioned ticket pricing norms for one of the biggest Tamil releases of the year.
Fans questioned the theater over the high ticket prices for ‘John Noygan’
A video widely circulated on social media shows a heated argument between moviegoers and theater staff over the price of ‘John Noygan’ tickets. In the clip, angry fans argue with the theater management in Namakkale, Tamil Nadu. A fan asked why tickets were being sold at Rs 300 when they believed the authorized rate was much lower. But the theater management rejected the claim and held the fans responsible for overselling tickets. “Who allowed you to sell tickets for Rs 300?” asked a man from the theater management. “Call the chief minister’s office and ask if you can sell it for Rs 300.” Another, meanwhile, asked the management about the prices, while the theater workers insisted that the rates were fixed according to the instructions received from the distributors. Since then, the exchange has gone viral with many users asking if the theater violated the norms of authorized pricing.
Strict ticket pricing rules for ‘John Noygan’
The controversy arose as authorities issued strict instructions to theaters to follow the approved ticket price structure for Jana Naigaan, which is considered to be Vijay’s first film release after taking over as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister. Officials have repeatedly warned cinema owners against charging more than government-sanctioned rates or indulging in unauthorized premium pricing. The viral video has consequently sparked fresh debates on social media, with many supporters calling on the relevant authorities to ensure that all cinema theaters adhere to these rules to avoid extra charges while watching movies.
