Legendary Ahom commander Lachit Borphukan, who led Assam forces to a historic victory over the Mughals in the Battle of Saraighat, may soon bring his life to the big screen. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma said this Aditya Dhar Approached to direct an epic Hindi biopic on the famous military leader.During a Facebook Live session, the Chief Minister said that the government wants to present the extraordinary story of Lachit Borphukan to the audience of India and the world.

Who was Lachit Borfukan?

Lachit Borphukan is revered as one of Assam’s greatest military commanders and remembered as a symbol of courage, patriotism and selfless leadership. Born on November 24, 1622 at Charaideo, he was the youngest son of Momai Tamuli Borbarua, the commander-in-chief of the Ahom army under King Pratap Singh, and Kunti Moran. Raised during the prolonged Mughal-Ahom conflict, Lachit received training in military strategy, governance, economics, Ahom scriptures and religion, preparing him for a life of public service.He rose successively through a number of important administrative and military posts, serving as Hanastidhara Tamuli, Jhura Barua, Shimluguriya Phukan and Dulakashriya Barua, before King Chakradhvaja Singha appointed him Borphukan or Commander-in-Chief of the Ahom army. Tasked with recapturing Guwahati from the Mughals, the king presented him with a ceremonial gold-plated sword (hengdang) as a mark of distinction.Lachit won lasting recognition for leading the Ahom army to victory over the Mughal Empire in the historic Battle of Saraighat in 1671, one of the most important military victories in Indian history. Facing a much larger Mughal force led by Raja Ram Singh I, sent by Emperor Aurangzeb, Lachit relied on guerrilla tactics and his deep understanding of the Brahmaputra River to overcome numerical difficulties.Despite battling serious illness during the decisive phase of the campaign, Lachit personally boarded a battle boat when some of his troops began to retreat. According to historical accounts, he rallied his troops declaring that he would die doing his duty to his king and country rather than leave the battlefield. Inspired by his bravery, the Ahom army regrouped and forced the Mughal forces to retreat, effectively ending Mughal expansion into Assam.Lachit Borphukan died of natural causes about a year after the victory. His memorial, Lachit Maidam, was built in 1672 at Hulungapara near Jorhat. His leadership and sacrifice continue to inspire generations, and Lachit Divas is celebrated across Assam on 24 November every year to commemorate his birth, valor and victory at Saraghat. His legacy is also honored nationally through the Lachit Borfukan Gold Medal, awarded annually at the National Defense Academy to a cadet who exhibits exceptional leadership qualities, the ideal for which the legendary commander is remembered.

Aditya Dhar approached Lachit Borphukan biopic

Sharing details about the proposed movie, Himanta Biswa Sharma He said that discussions with Aditya Dhar have already started.Referring to Dhar’s recent blockbuster, he said, “The movie Dhurandhar was a big hit. Aditya Dhar was the director and he is one of the most recognizable names among his contemporaries,” PTI quoted him as saying.The Chief Minister said that the government intends to produce a large-scale Hindi film that will introduce the story of Lachit Borphukan to the global audience.“I think if our government can make a film on Lachit Borphukan, we can make his heroism known globally. And it will be a special achievement for us,” he said.

Sarma also revealed that Dhar is expected to visit Assam in August to discuss the project further.However, he clarified that the biopic will go ahead even if Dhar doesn’t manage it in the end.“If Aditya Dhar can’t direct the film, we will approach other directors. The aim is to ensure a great biopic is made on Lachit Borphukan,” he said.The proposed project is part of the larger initiative of the Assam government to promote the history of the state through cinema. In its 2026-27 budget, the government announced plans to support films based on the lives of Lachit Borphukan and freedom fighter Kushal Konyar.So far, Aditya Dhar has not publicly reacted to CM’s announcement or confirmed his next directorial venture after the success of Dhurandhar: The Revenge.
