Jodie Foster suggests that Brad Pitt’s racing film ‘F1’ exemplifies how artificial intelligence can influence modern filmmaking and reshape creative storytelling in Hollywood. The actress made the comments during a panel discussion at the Aspen Festival of Ideas this week, where she discussed the evolving landscape of the entertainment industry with former studio executive Michael Linton.During Tuesday’s discussion titled “Who Owns Hollywood’s Future,” Foster suggested that the film’s structure and execution suggested it could have been created by artificial intelligence. “I don’t say that disparagingly, how could I? This movie made millions of dollars. But I watch a movie like ‘F1’ and I think, ‘F1’ is made by AI,” he said with a laugh at the Colorado event. “Right? I mean, the structure was exactly the structure you’d learn in school. The actors are saying that the lines would be written exactly the way they would be if a computer were to write them, which would be the right thing for the time.”
The film was a commercial and critical success
Despite Foster’s characterization of the film as an AI-generated ‘F1’ it achieved notable commercial success, grossing $634 million worldwide, according to Variety. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards, including wins in the Best Picture and Sound categories, proving that audiences and industry voters responded positively to the project regardless of its formulaic structure.
Rather than dismissing artificial intelligence entirely, Foster outlined a nuanced stance on how filmmakers should approach the technology. He identified specific applications where AI tools could prove beneficial. “What we would all love is for filmmakers to be able to dominate AI and never lose it,” he said, emphasizing the importance of maintaining creative control over technological tools. For “little helpful things” like pre-visualization of movie scenes before production, Foster admits AI tools can serve a useful purpose in the filmmaking process. He gave an example from his own recent work to illustrate how AI can be effectively employed. “If we’re able to consistently dominate AI over time, we’ll be able to create things that reflect us and we can make things better,” he said.Foster mentioned a dream-like sequence in his latest film ‘My Private Life’ that used AI assistance. He describes the images as absurd but ultimately successful in achieving the desired effect. The example demonstrated his belief that when filmmakers retain artistic control over AI applications, the technology can deliver results that work for the artistic vision and not against it.
