Prime Minister Narendra Modi Condolences on the death of the legendary Marathi theater personality Vijaya Mehtawho breathed his last at the age of 91 at his Mumbai residence. Vijaya Mehta Ji. She will be remembered as one of the towering figures of culture and cinema. A pioneer of modern Marathi theatre, she was known for her creativity and commitment to artistic excellence.”He also acknowledged the lasting impact of his work and offered his condolences to his loved ones and the artistic community.“His work has inspired generations of actors, directors and theatre-goers. Om Shanti.”Affectionately known as “Bai”, Vijaya Mehta was among the architects of modern Indian theatre. As a director, actor and producer, he was instrumental in shaping the country’s experimental theater movement. He was a playwright as well as a founding member of the Rangayan Theater Group in Mumbai Vijay Tendulkar and actors Arvind Deshpande and Sriram Lagoo.In a career spanning more than six decades, Mehta co-founded Rangayan and directed several landmark stage productions including Ek Shunya Bajirao and Ajab Nyaya Vartulacha. He also directed acclaimed films like Rao Saheb and Pestonji.Born Vijaya Jayavant on November 4, 1934, in Baroda, he trained under renowned theater mentors Ibrahim Alkaji and Adi Marjban. His distinguished career was recognized with various honors Padma Shri in 1986, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Direction in 1975, Tagore Ratna in 2012 and National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress.Apart from his theater work, Vijaya Mehta made a significant mark in Indian parallel cinema with critically acclaimed performances in films such as Kalayug and Party, garnering widespread acclaim for his powerful and understated performances.
