Born in Brooklyn, New York, Melvin James Brooks served as a combat engineer in the US Army during World War II. One of four sons of European immigrants, he grew up at home as a sickly child. In his youth, ‘The Producer’ star dreamed of playing the drums, but World War II put a stop to his plans, according to The Guardian.After returning home, Brooks took steps to actively participate in the entertainment business, playing drums at resorts for visitors. Once filling in for an ailing comedian, he took the stage and discovered the joy of getting a laugh. In the evening he was hired as a writer on ‘Your Show of Shows’. In his seven-decade career, the 100-year-old has received several awards, including Academy Awards, Tonys, Emmys and Grammys.Even though his age has reached triple digits, his passion for work continues. His famous show, ‘Spaceballs’ will have a reboot series on Amazon, scheduled for release in 2027 and he will reprise his role as Dai. Moreover, Mel Brooks will be voicing an important character in an upcoming animated film ‘The Land of Time’.

“I think laughter keeps you healthy and happy,” she shared her longevity secret during an interview with People, before adding, “Doing comedy is a great job. It keeps you sane and happy. It gives you a reason to live.”Earlier this year, Mel Brooks announced the donation of thousands of his documents and photos to the National Comedy Center in Jamestown, New York. “I’ve always prided myself on being able to make people laugh,” Brooks said in a statement to The Independent newspaper, “so it gives me great pride to know that my work will have a home in the National Archives of Comedy and will continue to make people laugh.”

Mel Brooks was engaged to Florence Baum, but they divorced in 1962 after having three children. He later married Oscar-winning actress Anne Bancroft in 1964 and had one child. They remained together until she died of cancer in 2005 at the age of 73.
