Cristiano Ronaldo achieved another major milestone at the FIFA World Cup on Saturday as Portugal drew 0-0 against Colombia in their final Group K match. The result was enough to see both teams qualify for the last 16, with Colombia topping the group and Portugal progressing as runners-up.The match also marked a historic personal achievement for the 41-year-old Portugal captain. Ronaldo made his 25th appearance at the FIFA World Cup, tying Germany legend Lothar Matthaus for the second-most appearances in the tournament’s history. Only Argentina captain Lionel Messi, who played 29 World Cup matches, has appeared more times on football’s biggest stage. While Ronaldo added another milestone to his remarkable career, he also extended an unusual record. The veteran striker has now been caught offside 11 times in the last two FIFA World Cups – four more than any other player in that period. Frenchman Kylian Mbappe and Colombian Luis Diaz follow on the list with seven offsides each.On the pitch, Portugal needed a win to secure top spot in Group K but struggled to break down Colombia’s well-organised defence. Ronaldo remained Portugal’s main attacking threat throughout the match, but clear chances were hard to come by.Colombia started brightly and almost took the lead in the first minute when Jhon Cordoba headed home before later forcing an excellent save from Portuguese goalkeeper Diogo Costa. Portugal enjoyed increasing possession as the game wore on and Bruno Fernandes came closest to scoring in the first half but was denied by Colombian goalkeeper Camilo Vargas. The South Americans almost pulled off a dramatic win in the 90th minute when Davinson Sanchez hit the back of the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Despite the goalless result, Colombia secured top spot in Group K, while Portugal also comfortably advanced to the knockout stages.
