Abhishek Bachchan and Karisma Kapoor’s broken engagement is still one of the most talked about relationships in Bollywood. While neither the Bachchans nor the Kapoor family have officially confirmed the exact reason behind the breakup, senior journalist Jyoti Venkatesh has now shared what he claims was one of the main reasons behind the marriage being called off.Speaking to Hindi Rush, Venkatesh revisited the speculations surrounding the much talked about engagement and its sudden end.
‘One of the main reasons was the prenuptial agreement’
Recalling the events, Jyoti Venkatesh said that though Abhishek and Karishma got engaged, their marriage was put on hold before it was finally called off.“Karisma ke aur abhishek ki engagement vi ho goyi thi. That engagement ke baad shaadi ka din zahar hote gale. In the end they didn’t get married.”Asked why the marriage did not take place, he said, “Kay karan logte hai. One of the main reasons was…Babita was against the marriage.”He also claimed, “Hamne vi suna hua tha. Signing prenuptial agreement karne ke liey majbur kiya tha mujhe.”Explaining the concept, he further said, “Foreigner me oh to sign the contract before the marriage… jiski wajah he entire property will go to the bride. If the marriage is annulled.”Venkatesh also mentioned that the Bachchan and Kapoor families had a warm relationship before the engagement.“Bachchan family aur kapoor family k relation bahut majboot rahe hai. Usi waja se oh rishtan ko aur majboot kala chahte de bier kaar.”
The engagement lasted only a few months
Abhishek Bachchan and Karisma Kapoor officially announced their engagement in October 2002 during Amitabh Bachchan’s 60th birthday celebrations. However, the engagement only lasted a few months before it was called off in January 2003.Over the years, various media reports have speculated about the reason for the split. A widely reported theory suggested that Karishma’s mother, Babita, wanted a prenuptial agreement and financial protection for her daughter, out of concern over the Bachchan family’s business situation at the time. However, neither the Bachchan family nor the Kapoor family have officially confirmed these claims or revealed the exact reason behind the split.Both eventually moved on with their lives. Abhishek Bachchan married Aishwarya Rai on April 20, 2007 and the couple welcomed their daughter Aaradhya. Karisma Kapoor married industrialist Sanjay Kapoor in September 2003. They had two children together—Samaira and Kian—before the marriage ended in divorce in 2016. Karisma has earlier described that phase of her life as deeply painful.
