Set to hit theaters on September 11, the film promises to showcase the duo in a whole new light. Talking about working with Akshay again, Saif described the superstar as family and admitted that their latest collaboration explores a much darker place than their previous outings.
Saif is excited to see Akshay Kumar in a negative role
Over the years, Saif and Akshay have shared crackling chemistry in films like ‘Yeh Dillagi’, ‘May Khiladi Tu Anari’ and ‘Tu Chor Main Sipahi’. However, ‘Highwan’ takes the actors away from comedy and puts them in an intense dramatic setting.Talking to Variety India about Akshay’s character, Saif said, “We are very lucky that he is playing this role in the movie. It makes it more exciting because it is a dangerous, negative role, and I haven’t seen him do it very often. I am very excited to see it.”Reflecting on a friendship spanning over three decades, Saif spoke candidly about the bond he shares with Akshay. According to the actor, their long association has created a mutual respect and effortless chemistry, which naturally translates on screen.Expressing his admiration, Saif shared, “I love Akshay. He’s like an elder brother to me. We’ve seen each other before. We go way back. There’s a special respect for someone who has served him for as long. We’ve been through a lot together. We’ve always had great chemistry.”
Priyadarshan often had to pacify the two on the sets
Although ‘Highwaan’ is a serious thriller, Saif admitted that he and Akshay couldn’t resist cracking jokes whenever the camera was off. Their playful antics often invite hilarious reprimands from director Priyadarshan.Recalling those moments, Saif says, “Priyan sir used to dismiss us a bit. He said, ‘You are behaving like naughty children.’ Akshay says, ‘He brings that out in me.’ I tell him, ‘You bring it out in me.’ Ever since we met on set, we’ve been talking shit. When we are alone, we are a little more mature. But together…”
‘Haywan’ leaves comedy behind
Fans have long associated the duo with their comic timing, but Saif clarified that ‘Highwan’ deliberately avoids relying on that familiar dynamic. Instead, the film explores a darker relationship between the two characters. Explaining the change, he said, “This film doesn’t rely on that comedic chemistry, which is good because I think it’s overdue.” At the same time, Saif is not ruling out another comedy with Akshay in the future. He added, “Who says we won’t do it again if it’s written beautifully?”Summarizing the tone of the film, the actor concluded, “It’s interesting that it’s a darker, more dramatic equation. It’s not all fat and gritty.
