NEW DELHI: The wait for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s historic India debut will continue after newly-appointed captain Shreyas Iyer confirmed that the 15-year-old batting sensation has not been included in the playing line-up for the opening T20I against Ireland in Belfast on Friday. Many thought that Sooryavanshi will make its first international appearance after its astonishing rise in the charts. Had he appeared, the teenager would have become the youngest player ever to represent India in men’s international cricket, eclipsing Sachin Tendulkara 37-year-old record. However, at the toss, Iyer put an end to speculation before explaining that the decision came down to team balance rather than the youngster’s fitness.“We’re going to pitch first. It’s a new surface for us, first time in Belfast. Considering the conditions, the environment and the wicket, pitch first. We have to want to get used to the conditions as soon as possible. We’ll take it one game at a time. You always say you don’t have to complicate things,” Iyer said. When asked if Sooryavanshi will make his debut, the captain said, “Unfortunately, no.”He then assured fans that the teenager remains firmly in India’s plans.“He (Sooryavanshi) will get his chance when the time comes. For now, we are going with three true seamers, one all-rounder,” Iyer added.
The teenage wonder remains on the fringes of history
Despite missing the first game, Sooryavanshi is still on the verge of rewriting Indian cricket history. Whenever he makes his international debut, the left-hander will become India’s youngest ever international cricketer, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar, who was 16 years and 205 days old when he made his debut against Pakistan in 1989.The Bihar youngster earned his first senior call-up after a sensational IPL 2026 campaign with Rajasthan Royalswhere he finished as the tournament’s leading run-scorer with 776 runs in 16 innings at an incredible 237.30. He also smashed a record 72 sixes, the most by any batsman in a single IPL season. The teenager carried that form into India A’s tri-series in Sri Lanka, blasting 94 off just 29 balls in the final against Sri Lanka A, an innings that included the fastest fifty in List A cricket history as he reached the milestone in just 11 deliveries.
A dream delayed, not denied
Speaking after receiving his first call-up for India, Sooryavanshi described wearing the Indian jersey as the fulfillment of a lifelong dream.“Words cannot explain it. The reason I picked up the bat from day one and went to the training ground: that dream has now been fulfilled. The biggest step in that journey has been completed today,” he said in a BCCI video.“I felt like I was dreaming when I saw that shirt. I couldn’t stop laughing. Sometimes things happen that you never imagined could happen.”While Indian fans will have to wait a little longer to see the teenage sensation on the international stage, Iyer’s comments made it clear that the omission is only temporary.
