Cape Verde’s remarkable debut at the 2026 FIFA World Cup reached another historic milestone on Friday as the Blue Sharks secured qualification for the round of 16 despite drawing all three of their group stage matches. A disciplined 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia, combined with Spain’s 1-0 win over Uruguay, was enough to send the African newcomers to second place behind Group H winners Spain.This achievement completes one of the most impossible stories of the tournament. Competing in their first ever World Cup, the island nation of just over 500,000 people advanced from a group that included former world champions Spain and Uruguay to become the smallest country ever to reach the knockout stages of the men’s World Cup.
Three draws, one historic qualification
Cape Verde went into their final Group H game knowing that qualification remained within reach, but their fate would depend on events unfolding simultaneously in Guadalajara.The Blue Sharks have already exceeded expectations by frustrating Spain to a goalless draw before coming back from behind to earn an impressive 2-2 draw against Uruguay. Another point against Saudi Arabia would leave them on three points, but progress depended on Spain avoiding defeat against Marcelo Bielsa’s side. Cape Verde produced another disciplined defensive performance, holding Saudi Arabia to a 0-0 draw as they nervously awaited news from the second leg. A few moments after the final whistle, confirmation came that Spain had beaten Uruguay 1-0. The result sparked emotional celebrations among Cape Verde’s players, coaching staff and fans, many of whom were seen hugging and shedding tears as qualification was officially secured.

The reward for their outstanding group stage campaign is a round of 16 meeting with defending world champions Argentina in Miami on July 3.
A feat achieved by only three nations
By drawing all three group stage games and still advancing, Cape Verde joined one of the most exclusive statistical clubs in World Cup history.They became only the fourth nation to qualify for the knockout round after drawing all three of their group stage matches. Before the Cape Verde Islands, only:
- Wales (1958)
- Republic of Ireland (1990)
- Cape Verde (2026)
Cameroon also drew all three games during their World Cup debut in 1982 but failed to progress, while New Zealand suffered the same fate after recording three draws during what was their second appearance at the 2010 World Cup.Cape Verde’s success goes beyond that unique record. They are also the first nation to get past the group stage on their debut World Cup appearance since Slovakia did so in 2010, and the first debutants to go unbeaten during the group stage since Senegal’s memorable run in 2002.
Vozinha delivers another heroic performance
Much of Cape Verde’s success has been built on the outstanding performances of veteran goalkeeper Vozinha, whose tournament has transformed him into one of the breakout stars of the World Cup.

The 40-year-old played another outstanding game against Saudi Arabia and kept a clean sheet. He first denied Mohamed Kanno in first-half stoppage time with a dangerous header before making a superb save in the 66th minute to deny Mohammed Abu Al-Shamat’s effort. Deep into stoppage time, with qualification hanging in the balance, he made one last crucial stop to deny Abdullah Al-Hamdan in the 92nd minute.

The veteran’s performances during the tournament earned him global attention, helping him amass more than 16 million Instagram followers during Cape Verde’s historic campaign.His mother, Ana Candida Évora, who waved a small Cape Verdean flag throughout the game, watched proudly from the luxury suite. It was only her second appearance at the tournament after visa issues prevented her from witnessing her son’s memorable seven-save performance against Spain earlier in the group stage.
From underdogs to World Cup giant killers
Before the start of the tournament, few gave Cape Verde any realistic chance of surviving a group that included Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia. Instead, the Blue Sharks leave the opening stage undefeated after frustrating one former world champion and denying another, while becoming one of the competition’s biggest stories.Spain finished top of Group H with seven points after wins over Saudi Arabia and Uruguay following an opening draw against Cape Verde. The Blue Sharks finished second with three points, beating Uruguay and Saudi Arabia to continue their historic adventure.Their next challenge will be the current world champion Argentina. On paper, Lionel Messi’s side will start as overwhelming favourites, but Cape Verde has already shown during this tournament that reputation alone means very little when the game starts.
