Ireland posted one of the biggest scores in their T20I history, beating reigning world champions India by 34 runs in the opening match of the two-match series at the Civil Service Cricket Club on Friday. It was Ireland’s first win over India in any format, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead in the series.Chasing 183 on a lively surface that offered help to the fast bowlers, India started positively but failed to adjust when the field widened. The visitors eventually lost for 148 as Ireland’s disciplined pace attack exposed India’s impatience despite a strong batting Abhishek Sharma. The left-handed opener provided the only real resistance, racing to a 20-ball half-century and briefly keeping India in the hunt. However, the wickets continued to revolve around him as Ireland kept up the relentless pressure.Debutant Jai Moondra enjoyed a dream start to his international career with a dismissal Sanju Samsonwho was pulling the ball back onto his stumps. Matt Hollard then hit back-to-back doubles, striking out Ishan Kishan and a new captain Shreyas Iyer. Kishan miscued an attempted leg kick while Iyer failed to clear the deep after miscuing a slower delivery.India reached 68/3 at the end of the Powerplay, but Abhishek’s aggressive innings ended when he dismissed Ben Calitz by pulling Liam McCarthy. Since then, Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube and the lower order failed to build meaningful partnerships as Ireland cruised to a memorable victory.Earlier in the day, India made an impressive start after opting to bat first. Harshit Rana, back from a four-month injury lay-off, starred with figures of 3/24 as India reduced Ireland to 36/3 inside the Powerplay.Ross Adair, Harry Tector and Tim Tector departed early and Rana dismissed Adair and Tim with short ball tactics while Arshdeep Singh trapped Harry Tector by pulling him into the attack.Shivam Dube then got Benjamin Calitz in after the batsman hit two sixes off Prasidh Krishna, leaving Ireland struggling at 51/4.Captain Lorcan Tucker anchored the innings with 50 off 36 deliveries. After a cautious start, Tucker shifted gears brilliantly, taking Axar Patel for two fours and a six in one over before reaching his half-century in just 35 balls. His innings also included an inventive off-spinner boundary off Prasidh Krishna before Harshit Rana came back to end his stay. With Ireland at 115/5, Gareth Delany and George Dockrell launched a powerful counter-attack that proved decisive. The duo added 49 runs in quick time, targeting the Indian bowlers in deadly overs.Delany narrowly missed out on a half-century, scoring 49, while Dockrell scored a brilliant 19. The turning point came in Prasidha Krishna’s final over, where Delany and Dockrell smashed 27 runs, including one four and three back-to-back sixes, completely turning the momentum in Ireland’s favour.Washington Sundar also endured a costly outing, conceding 19 runs in his only over, while a costly spell from Axar Patel added to India’s woes in the closing stages. Those costly overs ultimately helped Ireland take their total to a competitive 182/9.Harshit Rana finished as India’s top bowler with 3/24, while Arshdeep Singh took 2/28 and Axar Patel took two wickets. However, Ireland’s disciplined bowling effort and clinical execution during India’s chase ensured they celebrated a landmark win over the World T20 champions. The match also saw teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi wait longer for his international debut as India kept their usual opening combination and did not include the 15-year-old in the playing XI.
