Later in the innings, wicketkeeper Jamie Smith dropped a direct chance when Tom Latham was on 129. Both batsmen scored centuries and added more than 300 runs together. Smith redeemed himself by taking three catches later in the day, including Latham’s dismissal, but missed opportunities had already allowed New Zealand to build a huge platform. On a flat batting surface, such moments were of immense value and England wondered what might have happened if those chances had been taken.
